Over the last decade or so, the Marvel Cinematic Universe and other superhero-verses have generated numerous arguments about whether they can be labeled as ‘cinema’ or not. Many influential celebrities have spoken about how such movies have invalidated cinema and the cinematic experience for viewers. Even the celebrated director, Quentin Tarantino spoke up about how Marvel movies have undermined the actor’s star power by placing their characters on a bigger pedestal.

Naturally, some people supported him but what shocked fans was that even Marvel star Chris Evans seemed to agree with Tarantino over his alleged criticism of Marvel movies.

Quentin Tarantino
Quentin Tarantino is an exceptional filmmaker, credited to have made an indelible mark on cinema forever. The mastermind behind multiple cult classics and iconic movies, he came under fire for speaking about the negative impact of Marvel and other superhero movies on cinema. He stated on the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast (via The Guardian),
“I don’t hate them. But I don’t love them. I mean, look, I used to collect Marvel comics like crazy when I was a kid. My only axe to grind is they’re the only things that seem to be made. And they’re the only things that seem to generate any kind of excitement amongst a fanbase… Part of the Marvel-isation of Hollywood is you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters. But they’re not movie stars, right? Captain America is the star. Thor is the star… It’s these franchise characters [that] become a star.”
And recently in an interview with GQ, Chris Evans, himself agreed with Tarantino’s statement. While talking about ‘the beauty of working on Marvel movies’, he stated,
“You never really had to be front and center. Even in your own films sometimes. Quentin Tarantino said it recently and I was like, you know, he’s right. The character is the star. You’re there, but you don’t feel the burden of it.”
While his comments stemmed from a personal experience, fans were nonetheless angered.
Marvel Fans Angered Over Chris Evans Support For Tarantino’s Comments
Chris Evans as Captain America
Quentin Tarantino’s comments weren’t exactly what we call criticism, for they were rather directed over the culture such movies have generated and the alleged support such movies receive from fans and studios in comparison to other kinds of movies. Furthermore, many seemed to agree that his comments were correct up to a certain degree, for oftentimes, superhero movies are more about the characters rather than the actors.
As for Chris Evans, his statement stemmed from a more personal experience where he compared his role as Captain America with his other roles. His comments also came from an introspective perspective, generated by his initial hesitation to take on such a pivotal role and then eventually becoming comfortable helming such a huge franchise.
Despite it all, fans expressed anger over his statement. One fan even stated on X,
“I’m not totaly agree, for some heroes its not. We loved Cap because of Chris Evans, we loved Black Panther because of Chadwick Boseman, we loved Iron Man because of Robert D. Jr etc.. They brought so much to their characters, that in the end we went to see them as much as for their characters.”
Many stated how Marvel movies would never have been what they are now if weren’t for actors like him and Robert Downey Jr. However, an equal amount of people agreed with both Tarantino and Evans, especially praising the latter for his candid honesty and being real, much like Captain America himself.
