Marvel’s epic new Ultimate Universe has slowly been introducing new variants of iconic Marvel heroes and villains, and they will finally debut a fresh new version of the Guardians of the Galaxy in The Ultimates #8. The critically-acclaimed series follows Tony Stark and Doctor Doom as they collect heroes previously erased by The Maker, crafting a new superhero team to take on The Maker and his dangerous secret Council.

The new Guardians of the Galaxy, gloriously depicted below on the cover for The Ultimates #8 by Dike Ruan alongside a design page from series artist Juan Frigeri, will travel from Earth-6160’s far future, bringing secrets about the new universe’s mysterious past.

The Ultimates #8, from writer Deniz Camp (Children of the Vault, 20th Century Men), will introduce new versions of iconic characters, like Star-Lord, Captain Marvel, Cosmo, and the little-known Ultimate Nullifier, as the Ultimate Guardians team-up with new Ultimates member America Chavez to find their missing teammates and save the universe.

THE ULTIMATE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY! America Chavez takes center stage in this issue as a group of galactic travelers from a far-flung, Maker-free future arrive in search of her!

The Ultimate Guardians Of The Galaxy Are On An Important Mission

Ultimate Nullifier and America Chavez had a connection on Earth-616

Little has been revealed about the new Ultimate Guardians, but at first glance it appears they might be an interesting combination of the original Guardians of the Galaxy team from 1969 and the most well known 2008 iteration, which inspired the MCU film series of the same name. Like the 2008 group, Star-Lord plays a central role – and the new team also features former Guardians member Cosmo – in the team, but similarly to the 1969 crew who traveled to Earth-616 from the 31st Century, the Ultimate Guardians also hail from the future. The Ultimates need all the help they can get fighting the Maker’s Council, so heroes from a future where the Maker doesn’t exist anymore could come in very handy.

“Issue eight introduces the Ultimate Guardians of the Galaxy, and I hope readers enjoy meeting the heroes of the future as much as I enjoyed writing them! It’s our most cosmic issue to date, the life and death of universes in 20 pages, and explores new sides of the Ultimate Universe through Ultimate America Chavez, who has quickly become a favorite of mine.”

Writer Deniz Camp teases that The Ultimates #8 will feature “the life and death of universes,” while focusing on America Chavez and her role in helping to change the world after the Maker’s villainy. In an interesting twist, the new Ultimate Guardians will also include the young hero “Ultimate Nullifier,” whose design by Frigeri is fresh and fun. Ultimate Nullifier – named after the terrifying device of the same name because of the weapons he uses to remove people’s powers – first debuted in 2011’s Vengeance, leading the Teen Brigade team alongside America Chavez. Ultimate Nullifier was never seen after Vengeance but it is a truly exciting deep pull from Camp to bring Ultimate Nullifier and America Chavez back together!

Marvel might introduce Rocket, Groot, Gamora, or more…

In the Earth-6160 universe, Carol Danvers died after an uncontrollable power surge, so it is incredibly exciting to see a new Captain Marvel debut alongside the Guardians, presumably a Kree warrior judging by her blue skin. Of course, Star-Lord is present, but the new design makes it seem like this Star-Lord is not the Peter Quill we all know and love. Plus, Cosmo the dog is on the team, with a fancy mechanical leg! However, a major part of the new Guardians plot is their search for missing teammates… and who could that be? It would be amazing to see Groot, Rocket Racoon, or Mantis with a fresh new Ultimates design!

Marvel’s newest Ultimate Universe has not explored much of the cosmos, so it is incredibly exciting to finally meet the Guardians of the Galaxy of Earth-6160, as well as the iconic heroes who make up the newest iteration of the beloved team.

Ultimates #8 from Marvel Comics debuts on January 1st, 2025.
