The following contains major spoilers for The Ultimates #10, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The new Ultimate Red Skull has finally been unmasked, and his true identity might break Captain America.

With Tony Stark still out of commission, it falls on Captain America to lead the eponymous team of The Ultimates #10 into battle against the neo-Nazi militia known as the Red Skulls. Fortunately, veteran heroes such as Cap and the Human Torch have no problem tearing through the violent white-supremacists who occupy the sleepy American suburb of Castletown, though none of them are able to bring the organization’s Grand Skull to justice. Worse still, Cap manages to gather just enough information to unmask the Grand Skull ahead of their next confrontation, even if the revelation that it is none other than Bucky Barnes behind the mask will make that confrontation all the more devastating.

Marvel Comics’ original Red Skull, Johann Schmidt, was one of the publisher’s oldest and most infamous villains. First seen in “Red Skull – An Ear for Music” by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, which was the opening story from 1941’s Captain America Comics #7, Schmidt lost his mother in childbirth, which drove his father to nearly drown the newborn. Though Johann survived this experience, his childhood did not get any better because of the orphanage he was left in or the streets he would eventually grow up on. After murdering the only woman he loved in a fit of rage, a teenage Johann decided to join the then-budding Nazi party, eventually becoming a direct protégé of Adolf Hitler.

Despite his apparent devotion to Hitler, Schmidt soon enough took on his own attempts at world conquest as the Red Skull. Much like Captain America, the original Red Skull would be left in suspended animation following a harrowing encounter, leaving others to pick up his mantle during his decades-long absence. In the years since his reawakening, Schmidt has terrorized the likes of Captain America, and even the entire world, on numerous occasions. Although Schmidt was eventually cut down in 2024’s Thunderbolts #4 by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Geraldo Borges, various clones and successors have continued to carry on his demented legacy.

Wolverine’s Worst Enemy Is About to Become Marvel’s Next Evil God

Wolverine is staring down a supercharged version of his oldest enemy, and there might not be any stopping Romulus’ ascension to godhood.

In the current Ultimate Universe, the reality of Earth-6160, the Red Skull’s mission has been openly embraced by thousands of people all across the globe, giving rise to militia towns entirely populated by violent proponents of that same hateful and violent ideology. While Bucky Barnes has been leading the Red Skulls as their malevolent leader, his classic Marvel Comics mantle of the Winter Soldier has been thrust upon a completely different character in the form of Logan. Rather than Logan following his usual trajectory as the Wolverine, he was captured and brainwashed by Colossus, Magik, and Omega Red, the leaders of much of Europe who saw in their fellow mutant the perfect killing machine.
