Highlights

A potential Telltale Marvel game focusing on Loki and the TVA could be a massive success, especially considering the overwhelmingly positive reception to Loki’s season 2 finale and the Disney+ series as a whole. A Telltale game could be a great way to give fans more of Loki and the TVA without taking away from the show’s strong conclusion. Loki’s magic abilities would provide unique action for QTEs, while Telltale’s strong writing and the TVA’s unique characters could guarantee memorable conversations.

During its busiest period, Telltale was working on licensed games for both Marvel and DC. Alongside other comic book-focused hits like The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, Telltale’s Batman series provided a celebrated take on the Dark Knight. By comparison, its Marvel project was not as well received, as Eidos Montreal’s Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is what many gamers will think of instead of Telltale’s version. Though there were some good moments in its Guardians episodes, like Rocket’s origin story and a brutal final choice, Telltale could deliver a far better Marvel game by working with Loki.

To be clear, there are many Marvel characters that would be suitable for a Telltale game. Moon Knight’s multiple personalities make him an excellent candidate for its style of game, as does Daredevil’s dual identity since it can provide both action and dialogue-heavy court cases. Still, given the overwhelmingly positive reception to Loki’s season 2 finale and the Disney+ series as a whole, a Telltale game focusing on the TVA and the God of Stories could be a massive success for the developer. With all signs pointing to Loki Season 2 being the end of the show, a video game could provide fans with a very similar experience without taking away from the show’s unforgettable conclusion.

Dialogue Could Shine in a Telltale Loki Game

There are two things that make Loki stand out from other MCU shows, and those are the eye-catching TVA and the series’ stellar dialogue. Bringing the TVA to life in video game form could be easy enough, as Telltale has a clear model to use thanks to the show’s brilliant set design, though it is also in a good position to recapture Loki’s stellar writing. While the great performances of Loki’s cast, especially Tom Hiddleston, certainly helped elevate the material, the fact that the first season was able to keep fans invested despite ending with a long talk instead of a big CGI fight speaks volumes. A good story is what made Loki work well, and fortunately, storytelling is what Telltale has always been about.

Loki has a few important relationships that would be nice to see explored in a Telltale series. While his younger years could be shown through flashbacks, which could offer scenes with Odin, Frigga, and his brother Thor, focusing on the bonds he forged in the Disney+ series would be a better path to take. Specifically, more scenes tackling his sort-of-romance with Sylvie and his endearing friendship with Mobius could get MCU fans’ attention, and more of the adorable O.B. would be nice to see as well. While Telltale could offer a new threat for Loki and the TVA to focus on to help the game stand out, leaning into the relationships fans would now expect a Loki story to adapt will be essential. As shown by how Telltale’s Batman series used Joker, it could utilize choices to let fans shape familiar or fresh takes on the characters.

While official MCU tie-in games have been off the table thus far, Loki could change that, as the game could tackle a branch timeline where things went differently for the God of Mischief. This way, the game could pull things directly from the MCU, reusing actors if they wish to be involved and playing with concepts fans already know.

Loki’s Magic Would Guarantee Fun QTEs in a Telltale Game

In the past, Telltale games have often focused on characters who shine in different forms of combat. Bigby’s rough fist fights, Rhys stumbling into success, Clementine cutting down Zombies, Batman using his gadgets to punish thugs – all these characters have their own styles that help each game feel a bit different in terms of fight choreography, even if all of them play the same way. Loki’s magic would instantly make him stand out from Telltale’s other playable characters. Shapeshifting, making copies of himself, teleportation – all are fun abilities that would allow players to toy with whoever opposes him. With fun action able to accompany memorable conversations, the best MCU series could also become Telltale’s best game.

Telltale has played around in the Marvel Sandbox before, but thanks to his excellent Disney+ series, returning to it for a Loki game would be ideal.  Read More
