Warning! This article contains spoilers for Loki season 2.
Summary
One variant introduced in Loki season 2, episode 5, marked the MCU introduction of a Marvel Comics hero who is pivotal to the evolution of the God of Mischief. Loki season 2’s penultimate episode took some huge steps forward in advancing the storyline of Tom Hiddleston’s eponymous villain-turned-hero, following on from episode 4’s dramatic cliffhanger ending that saw the TVA’s Temporal Loom explode. The fallout of this eruption saw Loki’s friends at the Time Variance Authority thrust back onto their branched timelines, which gave audiences some insight into their lives prior to joining the TVA, and included some brilliant Easter eggs to real-world events and the pages of Marvel Comics.
During Loki season 2, episode 5, “Science/Fiction,” Loki is gifted his time-slipping condition once again, though this now allows him to travel to various branched timelines and come face-to-face with the variants of his TVA family. Owen Wilson’s Mobius is Don, a jet ski salesman in 2022, Eugene Cordero’s Casey is Frank Morris, an Alcatraz escapee in 1962, and Ke Huy Quan’s Ouroboros is A. D. Doug, a science fiction author and physicist in 1994 who seems to remember his time at the TVA. However, it’s Wunmi Mosaku’s Hunter B-15 who presents a subtle Marvel Comics Easter egg as her variant, a pediatrician from 2012 New York named Verity Willis.
Wunmi Mosaku’s character was thought to be an MCU original, but the confirmation that she is Verity Willis in her branched timeline means that a strong connection to Marvel Comics has been established. Verity Willis debuted in Marvel Comics’ Loki: Agent of Asgard #2 in 2014 as the daughter of Roger Willis and a member of the family tasked with protecting the Casket of Ancient Winters. Loki: Agent of Asgard was a crucial storyline for the God of Mischief, as this story saw Loki become the God of Stories, which seems to have occurred in Loki season 2. This storyline also marked the start of his partnership with Verity Willis.
Verity Willis’ Powers Explained
Not only does Verity Willis’ family protect the Casket of Ancient Winters in Marvel Comics, but her grandfather had also been entrusted with Andvaranaut, a magical ring that allows its user to see through any lie. As a baby, Verity inadvertently swallowed Andvaranaut, which dissolved into her system and granted her the ring’s power, allowing her to see through any lie, which became both a blessing and a curse for the unwitting superhuman. Nevertheless, upon meeting Loki in Agent of Asgard, this power meant that Loki and Verity struck up a close relationship very quickly, as she was the only being in the universe who could see through his illusions.

While Loki initially recruited Verity to help with various missions, such as helping him free Sigurd from Asgard, battling Doctor Doom, and helping him deal with his evil future iteration, King Loki. Loki and Verity became best friends, becoming so close that Loki saves her during the incursion event that wipes out the Marvel Universe in 2015’s Secret Wars event. Verity Willis is Loki’s partner in crime during his mission to become a hero and even aids in his transformation into the God of Stories, which sees him rewrite his own villainous story into something good. However, Marvel Studios may be taking a different turn with the character.
Does Verity Willis Have Powers In The MCU
While Hunter B-15’s variant in Loki season 2, episode 5, has been confirmed to be Verity Willis, it seems that this is simply an Easter egg hinting at the Marvel Comics character, and not a direct adaptation of Loki’s best friend. Sophia Di Martino’s Sylvie seems to have adopted this role, meaning there may not be room for Verity Willis in Loki’s overarching story. However, there is still one episode of Loki season 2 to be released, so it could still be revealed whether Hunter B-15 does actually have Verity Willis’ lie-detecting powers in the MCU. In fact, there have been hints that this may be the case.
Over the duration of Phase 4’s Loki season 1, Loki’s actions managed to convince Hunter B-15 that the TVA wasn’t what it seemed, and the pair did become closer, with B-15 eventually falling defected completely to Loki’s side. The pair have only worked together more closely in Loki season 2, so their relationship could continue to develop and grow now that Hunter B-15 has been revealed to be Verity Willis. Hunter B-15 was always one of the most effective Minute Men working for the TVA, perhaps hinting at her ability to see through people and their deceptions. This connection could be cemented further in Loki season 2’s finale.
