The Marvels is giving its three main heroes brand-new costumes, though this ruined one that was already perfect – however, a theory explains why the MCU changed that specific costume. After a long wait since the release of Captain Marvel in 2019, its sequel, The Marvels, is finally arriving as part of Phase 5 of the sprawling Marvel movie timeline. Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) won’t return alone, as she will be joined by Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) in a story that will see them joining forces and traveling across space to fight a new addition to the MCU’s movie villains gallery.

While investigating a wormhole linked to the Kree, Monica’s powers become entangled with those of Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel, so now every time they use their powers, they swap places with each other. Monica, Carol, and Kamala will have to team up to discover why this is happening, while also facing Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton), a Kree revolutionary with destructive plans. Unsurprisingly, The Marvels is upgrading the suits of its main characters, but in the process, it completely ruined Kamala’s already perfect costume – but a theory gives an in-universe reason for these changes.

Marvel Theory: Ms. Marvel’s New Costume Is Like Spider-Man’s In Far From Home

Ms. Marvel’s new costume in The Marvels might have the same purpose as Spider-Man’s Stealth Suit in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Spider-Man’s second solo adventure in the MCU took him to Europe as he joined his classmates on a two-week summer field trip. Unfortunately for Peter, it wasn’t the relaxing trip he hoped for, as Mysterio arrived and created chaos with his projections, while also tricking Peter into thinking he was an ally. This forced Peter to be Spider-Man in Europe, but in order to protect his identity as he didn’t want Spider-Man to operate in Europe because it would be way too risky, he was given a black Stealth Suit made by S.H.I.E.L.D. In addition to that, he was given the name “Night Monkey” to further set him apart from Spider-Man.

Now, Kamala’s new suit in The Marvels could have also been created to protect her identity now that she will be working with other superheroes and at a much bigger scale. Just like Spider-Man’s Stealth Suit, Ms. Marvel’s new look is similar to her original one but with more design, brighter colors, and it looks a lot more similar to Captain Marvel’s suits. While it’s still unknown where exactly The Marvels will take Kamala and who she will be working with, Nick Fury will be present, as he’s now working at S.A.B.E.R. with Monica Rambeau, so Kamala could now be linked to Fury, S.A.B.E.R., and S.W.O.R.D., which would require some extra protection for the young hero.

The one detail that works against the theory, however, is that Ms. Marvel’s suit in The Marvels no longer includes a mask, which would come in handy if the purpose of the redesign is to protect Kamala like S.H.I.E.L.D. did with Spider-Man and the Stealth Suit.

The MCU has been defined by trends, but most of them have ended up becoming tiring and have, ultimately, affected this universe. Among those trends, and one that has been going on for years now, is all about Marvel over-designing its characters’ costumes. From the beginning, the MCU has made many changes to the costumes of its heroes, and it’s understandable as the whole point is for them to look realistic. Adapting most of the costumes as they are in the comics wouldn’t really feel grounded and realistic, but Phase 4 started seeing a change as some characters were given comic-book-accurate costumes, as was the case of Ms. Marvel.

The audience witnessed the whole journey of Kamala’s costume, and its final version was very well-received given its comic-book accuracy. Ms. Marvel’s costume redesign in The Marvels continues the MCU’s over-design trend by exaggerating the design on the front of Kamala’s suit, one too many details on the sides and the arms, and very vibrant colors. Online reactions to Ms. Marvel’s new suit have been strong, proving that Marvel hasn’t paid attention to one of its biggest current problems.

Will Ms. Marvel Go Back To Wearing Her Original Costume?

Unfortunately, Ms. Marvel getting a brand-new suit in The Marvels most likely means that her perfect, original costume won’t return. It has become a tradition for Marvel to give its superheroes new costumes in every movie/new appearance, so Ms. Marvel’s original suit will now be left behind (unless she ever decides to wear it again out of nostalgia). If Marvel pays attention to its over-design problem as well as to the reaction from viewers, Ms. Marvel’s next costume could look more like her original one (with some upgrades, of course), but only time will tell for now. Kamala’s new suit being upgraded in order to protect her identity during the events of The Marvels would justify such drastic changes, but it probably won’t change the audience’s initial opinions of it.
