The hero-shooter genre is often hard to break into and new games in the niche genre often fail because they are competing with Blizzard’s massively popular and long-running title, Overwatch. However, on Dec. 6, 2025, Marvel Rivals was released on PlayStation, Xbox and PC, and its early success has it set up to be a successful game for years to come. With 33 characters at launch, players have plenty of iconic Marvel Comics to use in battle, and Ultron is on the way in an upcoming update as the game’s next strategist. The game’s roster is the main draw of Marvel Rivals, but each of its locations is also an enjoyable callback to some of the most iconic Marvel Comics.

Marvel Rivals features three main game modes (Convergence, Convoy and Domination), with each of them using a version of the game’s eight current maps. From the glorious halls of Thor’s Asgardian palace to the bustling streets of Shin Shibuya, each of the maps in Marvel Rivals is beautifully crafted, but some of them stand out from the rest because they make matches more lively with their destructible terrain, beautiful visuals and strategically placed mission areas.

Every Playable Character in Marvel Rivals So Far

As Marvel Rivals prepares for a full launch, its characters provide insight into where this game is going and what it hopes to be.

Every map in Marvel Rivals is filled with beautiful visuals that bring the world of Marvel Comics to life and make every match entertaining. Some of the maps keep things simple with their designs, leaving out copious structures and focusing on narrow pathways to add more tension to a match. Other maps go in the exact opposite direction and are too complex for their own good as they include many entrances to the point but do not make them easy for most characters to contest without wondering where the enemy will attack them from next. The map that suffers from this problem the most in Marvel Rivals is Birnin T’Challa.

Marvel Legacy #1

Black Panther and Killmonger

Birnin T’Challa is the capital city of Wakanda, the home of Black Panther in Marvel Comics. While the map’s details bring the advanced technology of the region to life, every point on the map is a chore to get to because of how the terrain of the map is designed. On the waterfall portion of the map, tunnels create chaotic fights that often slow the game’s pace to a screeching halt, and the other two smaller sections are not much better, as they both have elevated areas that sometimes make getting to the point efficiently feel like a chore. While the Birnin T’Challa is arguably one of the most detailed maps in Marvel Rivals, its level design makes every match on it feel excruciating to get through.

Some of the maps in Marvel Rivals do a perfect job of bringing their Marvel Comics counterparts to life, but they do this almost too well at times. Symbiotic Surface starts off as a simplistic map, but much like the symbiotes that it is home to, it later becomes complex to the point where it is aggravating to fight on and navigate upon respawning when the player’s opponent takes them down.

Spider-Man Family Vol. 2 #1

Venom and Knull

The initial point in Symbiotic Surface is arguably the best in the game, as it offers an open arena for both teams to fight over the point without having to deal with much destructible terrain getting in the way. However, if the offensive team secures this first point, the map becomes annoying, as it is full of dead ends to navigate and frustrating tunnels to fight through that can make aiming crucial abilities a nightmare. Symbiotic Surface fulfills the eerie goal of its comic origins, but it misses the mark in terms of playability.

10 Most Fun Marvel Rivals Characters, Ranked

With an impressive roster of iconic characters, as fans team up for Marvel Rivals, many wonder which among them are the game’s most fun to play.

While most maps in Marvel Rivals are unique to the game, one, in particular, pays too much of an homage to Overwatch, and the details are too similar to overlook. Overwatch is well known for its Hanamura map, which takes inspiration from Japanese culture, and Spider-Islands in Marvel Rivals appears to use many of those design philosophies while also borrowing the aesthetic. Luckily for fans, the map is a joy to fight on, and rewards players with a good understanding of each of the many buildings that litter the map.

Spider-Zero and The Master Weaver

Spider-Islands is a convoy map in which players have to help Spider-Zero escape from the clutches of The Master Weaver. The only flaw of Spider-Islands is the ramps at the end, as they are nearly impossible to block off as the defending team because they make it hard to hit enemies with attacks, except for characters with area-of-effect abilities like Moon Knight. While the modern Japanese aesthetic has become repetitive in the hero-shooter genre, Spider-Islands is an engaging map that makes the most of its visuals.

Yggsdrasill Path is Full of Fun and Chaotic Clutter

Game Mode: Convoy

Of all the maps included in Marvel Rivals, the Asgardian maps adapt the locations from the comics the best, and the Easter eggs contained in them make each stage feel like a joy to play in. Furthermore, the map does not favor any particular class, so it is the most balanced map in Marvel Rivals. Unfortunately, the map does come with one frustrating drawback that can make matches on Yggdrasill Path feel annoying at times.

Thor and Loki

Playing defense on this map is significantly easier than playing offense, as the offensive team can be spawn-camped by the enemy, and some team compositions will not allow the offensive team to move the convoy at all. Despite this flaw, most matches on this map are phenomenal, and this early game hiccup can easily be overlooked when considering the sum of Yggsdrasill Path’s parts.

10 Hardest Marvel Rivals Characters to Master, Ranked

Not every Marvel Rivals character is as easy to learn as Jeff the Land Shark or The Punisher.

While one of the Wakanda maps is beautiful, but has a few key flaws, the other map in Black Panther’s home country is the best map in Marvel Rivals by far. Its starting point is the most enjoyable point to defend, and the attacking team doesn’t feel helpless because there are numerous angles to try to access the point. Once the convoy starts moving, the map opens up and players can engage in combat in tight hallways or open areas around the convoy. Furthermore, the spawn point does not give either team an advantage on this map, making Hall of Djalia the most skill-testing map in Marvel Rivals.

Overall, the maps in Marvel Rivals are all phenomenally varied, and each one plays completely differently from the rest. Some of the game’s maps do have a few flaws, but the best maps in the game are almost flawless, and every match played on them shows off why Marvel Rivals is among the best titles that the hero shooter genre has to offer.
