Marvel has officially made Deadpool the mascot for April Fool’s Day, and it’s beyond perfect, given that he has become one of the most well-known jokesters in Marvel canon. While his humor often hides a tragic trauma, it has become so central to Wade Wilson’s character that it’s made him an icon. Now, Marvel is finally taking advantage of this on the funniest day of the year, and it’s a decision that’s long overdue.
Deadpool is a comedy comic icon, and this line of Marvel comic covers cements him as the ultimate mascot for April Fool’s Day.
According to Marvel, new variant covers featuring the Merc with a Mouth will adorn various series to celebrate April Fool’s, starting in mid-March. This variant cover series has officially been dubbed “April Pool’s Day,”and it will feature the antihero pulling pranks and more on many Marvel heroes.
Some of the notable series where fans can find these variants include Deadpool / Wolverine, X-Men, Cable: Love and Chrome, and even Amazing Spider-Man. New covers will be released throughout March, culminating in the final collection debuting on April 2nd—just a day after April Fool’s Day.

The Merc with a Mouth Brings the Laughter to the Holiday
What’s remarkable about the variant covers in this collection is the creativity the artists have shown in giving Deadpool the spotlight for April Fool’s Day. Kicking things off on March 19th, Cable: Love & Chrome #3 features a cover by Matthew Waite, where Deadpool transforms the cover into an old-school comic ad. On the same day, Deadpool/Wolverine #3, with artwork by Aaron Kuder, showcases Deadpool proudly standing on the beach… completely nude. Then, on March 26th, Brent Schoonoover’s cover for Amazing Spider-Man #70 humorously depicts Deadpool carrying Spider-Man in an homage to Spidey’s first appearance in Amazing Fantasy.
Alongside Amazing Spider-Man, there will be a cover for Uncanny X-Men #12 by Chad Hardin, showing Deadpool and his variants teaming up with the X-Men. This leads up to April 2nd, the day after April Fool’s. Deadpool #13’s variant cover by Sean Galloway features him happily eating chips while reading comics, and X-Men #14’s cover by David Lopez shows him taking the heroics out of superhero stances by eating a chimichanga. The collection concludes with Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe One Last Time, where the first issue features a supposedly blank cover. However, the back artwork by Dave Bardin reveals Deadpool giving snarky commentary to the reader for “lookin’ at my backside.”

It’s surprising that this will be Marvel’s first year tying Deadpool to April Fool’s Day. Given Wade Wilson’s sense of humor whenever he dons the red suit, it seems like something they would have done years ago, as the two fit so perfectly together. Now that the concepts have finally merged with an amazing name to boot, here’s hoping this becomes an annual tradition. There’s so much potential for future pranks Deadpool could pull on heroes and readers with unique artwork, and this first batch is a great start.
The April Pool’s Day variant collection will begin hitting comic store shelves on March 16th, with new artwork rolling out through April 2nd. This is a collection no Deadpool fan will want to miss. It may have taken Marvel a while to embrace this idea, but now that it’s here, it’s something that should continue for many years to come.
