[#item_full_content] [[{“value”:”Marvel Studios dropped a good bit of TV news at NYCC this week, most notably confirming Finn Jones’ Iron Fist would return for Daredevil: Born Again’s third (and final) season, a January 2027 return date for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and the renewal of animated horror series _Marvel Zombie_s.
Most of that was expected — but there was one surprise I didn’t see coming. Marvel TV announced a new live action series called Zodiac, billing it a “global spy thriller” set in the MCU. Who does it star? What does it mean? What’s it about? Yeah, they didn’t actually announce any of that just yet.
The only hint Marvel exec Brad Winderbaum gave the NYCC crowd was that “for anyone who knows the comics, if you look closely at this title design, you’ll see a few clues about where we’re going.”

So, let’s look closely at that title design.
Parts of the design clearly seem to be made up of disassembled pieces of the old S.H.I.E.L.D. logo, most notably the little eagle head in the “A.” Then there’s the segmented “O,” which could allude to the Zodiac group of supervillains introduced in Marvel Comics back in 1969.
But my best guess? We’re probably dealing more with a loose adaptation of Jonathan Hickman’s take on the Zodiac from his Secret Warriors arc, which revolved around a secret organization made up of spies from across the spectrum (including Nick Fury), HYDRA, etc. That fits the “spy thriller” motif they’re teasing, and could mark a return to the Winter Soldier type of storytelling vibe.
Could this connect to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?
All this talk of a spy thriller begs the question: could we finally see some connections to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the mostly-abandoned Marvel TV series that was, y’know, a big spy adventure for seven seasons on ABC from 2013-2020?
I’ve written before about how the series was actually really great, and featured one of the best twists Marvel ever attempted in film or TV. There’s been constant debate about whether or not the show is still part of the MCU canon, and it’s a question Marvel has largely side-stepped by… well, ignoring pretty much everything that happened in the show.
For a refresher, the series tackled a ton of Marvel lore across five seasons. It had S.H.I.E.L.D. continuing on as a secret spy organization after the HYDRA reveal in Winter Soldier, Ghost Rider(s), Life Model Decoys, a ton of lower-level Marvel Comics baddies, the continued threat of HYDRA, time travel and more. Seriously, it was a wild ride. (Of note: we’re getting a new Ghost Rider movie with Ryan Gosling in 2028, so reintegrating any Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. canon could complicate whatever they’re cooking up with that movie).
But it is a lot of territory that would very organically make sense in pretty much any version of a Zodiac TV series. So it’s something to keep in mind.
I’d normally be inclined to think that Marvel would probably avoid bringing back characters from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (with the most obvious being Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson and Chloe Bennett’s Daisy Johnson), since they’ve generally ignored it up to this point.
But after Marvel has retooled its TV strategy with Daredevil: Born Again, which is staging a full-scale Netflix-era Defenders reunion next season? It doesn’t seem that far fetched to think they could do much the same by folding in some elements from the S.H.I.E.L.D. series into a new, bigger spy thriller. I’m not saying I’m counting on it, but it wouldn’t surprise me, either.
But for now? It’s just theories and conjecture. Hopefully we’ll get some answers soon-ish, though. Casting is slated to start up in just a few weeks, with plans to shoot in spring 2027 in London. The series is slated for a 2028 premiere on Disney Plus.
