On May 24, 2025, it was announced that comics and television writerΒ Peter David had passed away after dealing with persistent health complications. After a brief career as a journalist and science fiction short story submitter, David began his career in comics within the publishing division of Marvel Comics, eventually crossing over into writing after successfully selling stories for the Spider-Man titles. Among them were issues 107-110 ofΒ Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man known as βThe Death Of Jean DeWolff,β which received notoriety for its darker subject matter and mystery storytelling. Such aspects would become a familiar quality of Davidβs storytelling style in comics, often focusing deeply on the psychology and meta-narratives of the characters while supplementing it with a peculiar sense of humor.
For Marvel, David would go on to pen a long-running series ofΒ The Incredible Hulk andΒ X-Factor, handling the former for 12 years, where he would further deepen the complexity of the characterβs emotional trauma and develop heightened science fiction concepts such as the characterβs future evil self as the Maestro. Likewise, at Marvel, David would create the famous fusion of cyberpunk and superheroism withΒ Spider-Man 2099, whose legacy would go on to shape video games such asΒ Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and be adapted in the blockbuster filmΒ Spider-Man: AcrossΒ theΒ Spider-Verse. David also wrote the introduction for the teamΒ Thunderbolts to Marvel Comics, although the team proper was developed and created by fellow writer Kurt Busiek with artist Mark Bagley.
At rival company DC Comics, David had success creating the team comicΒ Young Justice, which went on to be adapted into an animated TV series teleplays, along with acclaimed work on major characters like Aquaman and Supergirl. Davidβs prior roots in science fiction would blossom in the television industry, writing screenplays for shows likeΒ Babylon 5 and the aforementionedΒ Young Justice adaptation.
The last few years of Davidβs life were marked by financial difficulties, exacerbating his health problems. Pronouncedly, Davidβs battles with kidney disease necessitated the need for a GoFundMe after losing access to his Medicaid insurance and incurring greater costs forΒ surgeries.
