Summary
Contains spoilers for Immortal Thor #6-7!An upcoming Thor story is delving deep into the God of Thunder’s mythic past, as he and Loki confront the first ever Loki of this multiverse. As forces in both the past and the present attempt to meddle with this tale for their own ends, how it the story is told, and how it ends, will define both Thor’s past and his future, as the same Elder Gods he faces in the past return in the present day.
Marvel’s preview for Immortal Thor #7 – written by Al Ewing, illustrated by MartÍn Cóccolo, colored by Matthew Wilson and lettered by VC’s Joe Sabino – flashes back to a showdown between classic Thor, Loki and the Elder God the Utgard-Loki.
The previous issue, Immortal Thor #6, began the flashback, as Loki recounts the tale of a younger, brasher Thor dragging Loki on an adventure to the hall of the Utgard-Gods, a classic story which promises to relate to the present-day fight against those same Gods, who’ve been an ever-present threat since the beginning of the series.
Marvel’s Most Evil Company Is Launching Its Own Thor Replacement as “THE ROXXON AGE OF COMICS BEGINS”
Marvel (a Roxxon subsidiary) is rebranding Thor for today’s market, as the God of Thunder’s legacy is taken over by the world’s biggest corporation.
The recent revelation that Marvel Comics was purchased – in the Marvel Universe – by Roxxon Corporation, and the announcement of the upcoming Roxxon Presents: Thor series, suggests that the Asgardian Avenger may not have the final say in his own story, as Thor faces the possibility of losing control of both his past, and his destiny.
Immortal Thor has expanded on the origins of the Elder Gods, cosmic beings who have appearanced in different forms, and different roles, throughout the history of Marvel’s Thor. Writer Al Ewing has transformed these mysterious deities into the Utgard-Gods, the primordial incarnations of roles the Asgardians would later inherit. It’s now been revealed that along with classic Elder Gods, like Thor’s mother Gaea, the Elder Gods also included the first Gods of Thunder, the archetypal Utgard-Thor, and his brother, the Utgard-Loki.
As the preview pages for the issue indicate, Immortal Thor #7 continues Al Ewing’s retelling of the story from 1978’s Thor #272, which featured the Asgardian brothers being challenged by a giant, superpowerful being known as “Utgard.” Ewing has reimagined the Utgardrealm for this contemporary version of the tale, and accordingly, it appears that the role of the adversary in the story has been recontextualized as Utgard-Loki. However, more than just real-life author Ewing updating the tale, forces within the story itself are trying to reshape the narrative – and they’re all Thor’s enemies.
Thor’s Enemies Want To Rewrite His Past – And They Might Succeed
The flashback reimagining Thor #272 is being shaped by several different storytellers. One is present-day Loki, who is using their story-based magic as the Skald of Realms to change the story as they tell it. The other is classic Thor villain the Enchantress, working with the villainous Roxxon Corporation, who seek to do the exact same thing. The end of Immortal Thor #6 depicted her and Roxxon CEO Dario Agger reading from the Thor #272 comic book itself, with Enchantress promising to change the story to her own devices.
The God of Thunder’s current fight is not just a battle of wills, but a battle of narratives. Which version of Thor’s story wins out in the end remains to be seen. However, the recent revelation that Marvel Comics was purchased – in the Marvel Universe – by Roxxon Corporation, and the announcement of the upcoming Roxxon Presents: Thor series, suggests that the Asgardian Avenger may not have the final say in his own story, as Thor faces the possibility of losing control of both his past, and his destiny.
