WARNING! Spoilers for Daredevil: Unleash Hell – Red Band #3

Daredevil lore is in for a massive shake-up as the Marvel Universe unveils a new Elektra to challenge the original. Elektra Natchios’ Daredevil has faced off against her share of formidable adversaries since she first took up the mantle originated by Matt Murdock, but she may meet her match against her latest opponent as she’s confronted by her own hellish counterpart.

Daredevil: Unleash Hell – Red Band #3 by Erika Schultz, Valentina Pinti, and José Luis Soares Pinto continues the epic, blood-soaked exploits of Elektra’s Daredevil as she hunts down a terrifying new Muse who’s being haunted by the spirit of the original serial killer. However, Elektra’s battle against Muse doesn’t pan out as she’d hoped, and she ends up dying – but not before taking the possessed Morgan with her.

Daredevil then awakens in Hell, and she soon discovers that she and the two Muses aren’t alone. She is confronted by another Elektra who sports a chilling redesign, and her name is revealed to be Helektra.

Daredevil Comes Face-to-Face with Her Terrifying Counterpart in Hell

Elektra’s horrifying alter ego is absolute nightmare fuel, befitting her “Helektra” moniker. She wears an outfit that resembles Elektra’s classic costume, though it’s black rather than red, and her signature bandanna features devil horns that call her Daredevil suit to mind. Of course, she isn’t an exact duplicate of the Elektra readers are familiar with. Like Muse, she has a pale white face with blood oozing from her blinding red eyes. Moreover, Helektra’s body is covered with bulging veins and exposed muscles, and she also has fearsome claws that are made visible as she grips her iconic sai.

Matt Murdock and Elektra Natchios have both worn the Daredevil cowl, but who wore it better? Marvel’s current Daredevil writer weighs in.

The existence of Helektra tracks with Elektra’s previous experiences with death. Prior to being taken out by the new Muse, Elektra had already perished before in Marvel lore, such as when Bullseye defeated her in Daredevil #181 by Frank Miller and Klaus Janson. Having a history with Hell has granted her abilities that she carries with her in life, such as the supernatural power to sense hellish energies. Because she’s no stranger to death, she isn’t afraid of Hell itself. With that being said, Helektra might prove to be far more dangerous than any other creature Muse could have unleashed upon her in the underworld.

Elektra’s Battle Against Helektra Proves Her Worst Enemy Is Herself

Despite taking on the mission of Daredevil along with the mantle, Elektra still has demons she must work through – and in this case, that term is both figurative and literal. Donning the horns has changed this former mercenary for the better, as has Matt’s influence, but her vigilante endeavors have yet to fully wash the blood off her hands. She’s trying her best not to kill anymore now that she’s following in Daredevil’s footsteps, yet Helektra represents her struggle to believe she’s worthy of redemption. To overcome Helektra, Elektra’s Daredevil must overcome her guilt and face her dark side head-on.
