Warning! Spoilers ahead for Amazing Spider-Man #67!Thanks to Spider-Man, the Marvel Universe is on the precipice of a curse that could make the Marvel Zombies’ world look like a playground by comparison. Peter Parker has been challenged to keep the Earth safe from the Scions of Cyttorak, but his failure is about to usher in a terrible plague on the Marvel Universe.
In Amazing Spider-Man #67 by Justina Ireland and Andrea Broccardo, Spider-Man is still grappling with the futility of his work after his battle with Cyra. But Doctor Strange arrives to whip Peter into shape, by telling him about the Blight, a destructive cosmic energy.
Strange reveals that his covenant with Cyttorak was meant to hold back the Blight from invading the Earth. If the Blight is freed, it will lead to an affliction called ‘Soul Rot’, which causes people to seek out and destroy what they love. Unfortunately, Doctor Strange’s words fall on deaf ears as Peter rebuffs his ally.
Spider-Man’s Failure is Bringing Soul Rot to the Earth
The Marvel Universe Could Tear Itself Apart at Any Moment
As the new Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Doom took it upon himself to handle the Scions of Cyttorak in a different way than Stephen Strange. Doom called upon Spider-Man to face the Scions in a series of battles, endowing him with arcane weapons, a new costume, and even extra lives to help him survive the fights. Peter rose to the occasion and took on the cosmic entities’ heirs. Unfortunately, Spider-Man found a worthy adversary in Cyra, whose challenge made Peter feel the weight of thousands of deaths. Disillusioned at the pointlessness of his work, Spider-Man called it quits.
Spider-Man picked the worst time to quit, because Strange has made it clear that the covenant he forged with Cyttorak is the only thing holding back the Blight. If that force makes its way to Earth, the Soul Rot is going to impact everyone, forcing the entire population to turn on each other and destroy the things closest to them. Marvel Zombies was bad enough, but if nothing else, those ghouls were simply battling a hunger that stripped them of their humanity. This Soul Rot is going to have a much more violent (and deadly) result for the Marvel Universe.
Soul Rot Will Completely Destroy the Marvel Universe
Can Spider-Man Summon the Will to Stop It?
It’d be bad enough if Soul Rot was just impacting regular, non-powered people. But Strange implies that this will happen to everyone, including the most powerful heroes and villains in the Marvel Universe. Strange even calls Soul Rot “worse than death“, so as bad as things got in Marvel Zombies, they’re going to be even worse when this curse comes to infect everyone, potentially causing a war that could end every living being in the Marvel Universe.
The only person who can stop this is the chosen champion, Spider-Man. But Peter’s too wrapped up in the depression caused by his fight with Cyra. If he doesn’t snap out of it, everyone he’s ever loved or cared for is going to be infected with Soul Rot. If that happens, it won’t be long before Spider-Man is just one of the many people fighting the people he cares about, creating a much more dreary atmosphere than Marvel Zombies could ever muster.
