Godzilla in the MonsterVerse is the living embodiment of nature, feeling Earth’s imbalances and serving as its protector, making Galactus a formidable opponent.

Galactus is a cosmic being in the Marvel Universe who once threatened to consume Planet Earth, just as he’d done to countless words across the cosmos, and Godzilla is Earth’s greatest protector who is roughly the same size as Galactus. In other words, if there was ever a Godzilla/Marvel crossover, it’s a given that these two would fight. And now, that’s become an utterly epic reality, as Galactus vs Godzilla finally unleashes the ultimate pop culture clash of titans.

Marvel issued a press release announcing the Godzilla Variant Cover initiative, which will see the King of the Monsters going toe-to-toe against some of Marvel’s most iconic characters – heroes and villains alike. This is in celebration of Godzilla’s original comic book series, which was published by Marvel Comics back in the ‘70s, as Marvel is reprinting all 24 issues in two separate formats: Godzilla #1 Facsimile Edition and Godzilla: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus.

One of the variant covers is for Fantastic Four #25, featuring Godzilla trading blows with Galactus, as the Fantastic Four themselves fly away from the overwhelming level of destructive power exhibited by the two massive titans. Galactus charges a blast of the Power Cosmic in his hands, but Godzilla is right on top of him, attempting to divert the blast. This puts Galactus at face-level with Godzilla, leaving him wide open to taste the full might of the King of the Monsters’ atomic breath.

Marvel & MonsterVerse Prove Godzilla & Galactus are True Cosmic Rivals

Godzilla: Dominion by Greg Keyes and Drew Edward Johnson

While Godzilla’s purpose/metaphoric nature of his existence varies depending on the story, the version of the King of the Monsters fans get in the MonsterVerse is that of the living embodiment of nature itself. As explained in Godzilla: Dominion (a MonsterVerse tie-in comic), Godzilla can literally feel what the Earth feels, as if his nervous system is connected to the entire planet. This allows Godzilla to be alerted whenever there’s an imbalance – ie, human pollution, kaiju attack, etc. And that’s also how Godzilla is able to maintain his position as the Earth’s greatest protector.

Galactus, on the other hand, is a being older than the universe, whose cosmic purpose is to consume planets in order to maintain a universal balance. Earth holds no significance to Galactus, as it’s just another planet that can temporarily satiate his endless hunger, thereby allowing the planet to contribute to the balancing of cosmic scales. In other words, Galactus is the closest thing to a true rival to Godzilla there is, meaning if there was a Godzilla/Marvel crossover, there would be no greater enemy for Godzilla to battle than Galactus.

Marvel has the Chance to Give Godzilla His Most Powerful Upgrade: Cosmic Godzilla

If Galactus came to Earth during a Marvel/Godzilla crossover, then their battle would be inevitable. However, that doesn’t mean the two would have to stay enemies throughout the crossover, as Galactus has one trick up his sleeve that would both defeat Godzilla and make him unimaginably powerful: making him his Herald. Galactus could imbue Godzilla with the Power Cosmic, and turn the beast into his slave, forced to prepare worlds across the universe for Galactus’ coming. That would be so cool to see, and would turn these cosmic opposites into the most terrifying duo in the universe.

Unfortunately, any potential storyline surrounding Godzilla and Galactus’ battle is purely speculative, as there are no current plans for an official Godzilla/Marvel crossover aside from the Godzilla Variant Cover initiative, which limits Godzilla’s presence in the Marvel Universe to a few handfuls of still images. However, that alone is still incredibly fun, as is coming up with potential narratives stemming from these variant covers, with Godzilla vs Galactus arguably being the most interesting of the bunch.
