Marvel is celebrating the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine movie with new comic cover art and a series of team-up stories titled Weapon X-Traction. On July 26, fans will be able to watch the long-awaited movie, starring Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. However, that’s only the start of what Marvel is offering fans. The team-up miniseries Deadpool & Wolverine WWIII (from Adam Kuber and Frank Martin) is currently following their battle against the mysterious villain Delta, and now Weapon X-Traction promises yet more “violent, crass, and chaotic” adventures.

This summer, Weapon X-Traction will appear across eight Marvel comics. Written by Ryan North and drawn by Javier Garrón, the story is doing something a little different – chapters of Weapon X-Traction will be included in Marvel’s July and August comics at no extra charge, with those issues also getting dedicated variant covers featuring the Merc with a Mouth and the Best There Is (as well as Dogpool!)

In a recent press release, Marvel has laid out the reading order for Weapon X-Traction and shared the hilarious variant covers fans can expect to see on comic store shelves. The story’s summary reads:

With no increase on the select issues’ pricing, the WEAPON X-TRACTION backup stories will give readers a dose of Wolverine/Deadpool action at no extra charge! Longtime comic readers know all too well that Deadpool and Wolverine together makes for more some of the wildest misadventures ever told in the Marvel Universe. WEAPON X-TRACTION will be no exception with a weary Wolverine and a clingy Deadpool on an epic journey across the Multiverse, battling zombies and gun-wielding librarians and – of course – one another! Violent, crass, and chaotic, it’s also perfect for new fans looking for a solid introduction to the comic book storytelling behind these two icons.

Marvel Celebrates Movie Team-Up with Variant Covers and Bonus Stories

Wolverine and Deadpool are both alumni of the shadowy Weapon X program – a government division dedicated to experimenting on mutants in order to create living weapons. Wolverine is considered the program’s biggest success, while Deadpool was seen as a failed experiment until Weapon X tried to dispose of him and discovered his immensely powerful healing factor. Deadpool’s irreverent, wisecracking nature makes him a fun character to pair with Wolverine, Marvel’s ultimate stoic loner, however some degree of respect does exist between the two, and Logan has recruited Wade multiple times to serve on his clandestine X-Force team. Speaking about the project, writer Ryan North says:

Javier is an insanely talented artist, and he is absolutely nailing the fine balance between comedy, violence, and big important feelings that characterize Deadpool. Taking him and Wolverine across the multiverse as they try to save everything – and not murder each other at the same time – has been a delight. The fact that this story will be appearing across tons of different Marvel comics in 5-page chunks has been a fun challenge too: I love me a formalist comic, and this is like a series of short films that also add up to a feature. I really think it’s something special!

Comic fans will be overjoyed to see Marvel making such an effort to get movie fans interested in the comics too – the inclusion of Weapon X-Traction in existing series invites fans of Ryan Reynolds’ movie portrayal to check out other Marvel series while still getting a dose of Deadpool and Wolverine specifically tailored to be read in bite-size installments. Fans can check out Wolverine and Deadpool‘s new team-up starting this July.
