Marvel Studios’ 2021 film, Eternals, teased a promising future for Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Harington is interested in returning to the role, he has been kept out of the loop about what Marvel plans to do with the character.

Speaking with Screen Rant to promote his new movie Blood for Dust, the actor shared that he is still waiting to hear from Marvel about when he’ll return to the MCU as Dane Whitman, expressing interest in seeing the character assume the title of the Black Knight like he does in the comics. “I hope that they do something with that character. I think that character is fascinating and brilliant. And I love his trajectory in the comics,” he said. “I love the idea of a good guy being turned bad by his superpower. I think that’s brilliant. I’m not sure whether we’ve had a protagonist that’s like that, so I think it’s a really strong idea. I’d love them to [revisit him].”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Jeff Ward opens up about what it would take for him to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Harington continued, “I don’t know, though. The honest answer is nothing’s in the works at the moment. If they decide to use the character in something, or as a solo thing, I’d be very excited by it. But I don’t think it’s planned at the moment.”

Dane Whitman Almost Appeared in Moon Knight

Eternals so far marks the first and only appearance of Harington as Dane Whitman, who works as a history professor at the Natural History Museum in London. He is also the boyfriend of Sersi (Gemma Chan), one of the titular Eternals. Whitman’s ties to the Natural History Museum almost resulted in Whitman returning to the role in 2022 for a quick cameo in Moon Knight. Unfortunately for Harington and the rest of the Marvel fandom, the cameo was scrapped as head writer Jeremy Slater didn’t want to include Whitman if it didn’t progress the character’s arc as Black Knight.

Eternals ended with Sersi getting taken by the Celestial Arishem right after Whitman professed his love for her, while the movie’s post-credits scene teased the character’s future as the Black Knight. As Whitman reaches out for the Ebony Blade in the scene, an off-screen Blade (Mahershala Ali) asks him if he is “ready” to wield the ancient sword. While Blade’s inclusion in the post-credits scene led many fans to assume that Dane Whitman would become the Black Knight in Marvel Studios’ Blade reboot, Harington revealed in July 2023 that he was “never meant to be in the Blade movie and isn’t.”

Kit Harington’s Game of Thrones Spinoff No Longer in the Works

While Harington is best known for being part of the Games of Thrones and MCU franchises, it doesn’t look like he will be returning to either anytime soon. In addition to not knowing what the future holds for Dane Whitman, Harington confirmed that the planned Game of Thrones spinoff series centered around his character, Jon Snow, was no longer in development at HBO. “Currently, it’s off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough,” the actor explained. “So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.”

Eternals is available to stream on Disney+. Kit Harington can also be seen in his newest movie, Blood for Dust, premiering in theaters and on digital on April 19, 2024.
