Expect the unexpected for the X-Men in Marvel’s “giant-size” format in 2025, according to group editor Tom Brevoort
Marvel has just relaunched its X-Men comic book line under the guidance of executive editor Tom Brevoort, but there are already big plans in place for the mutants in 2025. And, when we say “big,” what we really mean is… giant-sized.
In the latest installment of his Substack newsletter, Brevoort is asked by reader Jackie Laura Dragotta if there are plans for the X-Men to be part of Marvel’s current series of releases celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Giant-Size format. So far, Marvel has published a number of Giant-Size issues this year, including Giant-Size Spider-Man, Giant-Size Daredevil, Giant-Size Thor, and Giant-Size Fantastic Four — including, in May, a special issue titled Giant-Size X-Men, spotlighting Angel.
Brevoort’s answer doesn’t reference that issue, however, but instead looks forward towards the future. “There will be some giant-size X-Men goodness coming your way in 2025 as a part of this anniversary celebration, Jackie, but not exactly in the way that you’re imagining. Stay tuned.”
There are a couple of things worth pointing out in the above response — including the fact that this would appear to signal that Marvel will keep its Giant-Size program going past the anniversary year, if Brevoort is referencing 2025. The “not exactly in the way you’re imagining” part is particularly noteworthy, however, suggesting that plans won’t be as straightforward as simply releasing Giant-Size issues of current X-Men series such as Uncanny X-Men or Exceptional X-Men.
It shouldalso be noted that 2025 might not be the 50th anniversary of the Giant-Size format, but it will be the 50th anniversary of Giant-Size X-Men #1, the comic book that introduced the All-New, All-Different X-Men as a team, and featured the first appearances of mainstays Storm, Colossus, and Nightcrawler. Given how important each of these characters — and the All-New, All-Different X-Men as a group — proved to be for Marvel as a whole, perhaps there are plans afoot to have a giant-sized half-century celebration of the most important, most successful giant-sized comic of them all. We’ll have to keep our eyes peeled for more updates in the next few months to find out.
