The Marvels is essential viewing for the next chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s Multiverse Saga. The film witnesses the origin story of its titular trio, as Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) team up to save the universe from the villainous Kree zealot Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton).
While The Marvels was far from a perfect film, it has propelled the Multiverse Saga’s storyline forward in a significant way. From massive teases for future team-ups to hints at the plot of Avengers: Secret Wars, The Marvels leaves audiences with several major implications about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
10 Ms. Marvel Possesses The Quantum Bands
Read CBR’s Review of The MarvelsThe Marvels finally confirms that Kamala Khan’s ancient bangle is indeed one of the Quantum Bands from Marvel Comics. Kamala first inherited her bangle during the events of Ms. Marvel, leading her to unlock her latent mutant abilities. After the Marvels’ battle with Dar-Benn, Kamala came to possess both of the Quantum Bands, making her more powerful than ever before.
In Marvel Comics, the Quantum Bands are powerful relics most commonly associated with the superhero Quasar. The MCU’s rendition of the artifacts makes them even more powerful, even to the point of ripping holes between universes. This potentially puts Ms. Marvel on the same power level of America Chavez, who can also travel between universes using her superpowers.
9 Carol Danvers Is Back On Earth
Captain Marvel’s MCU timeline has been spotty to say the least, especially when it comes to her time on Earth. However, The Marvels finally brings Carol Danvers back to her home planet. Settling down in the Rambeau homestead in Louisiana, Carol is officially back on Earth to stay.
It has been over thirty years since Captain Marvel remained on Earth for an extended period of time. Now resigned to remain on her home planet, Carol can finally begin to restore the memories that the Kree stole from her former life. Moreover, this new arrangement allows Captain Marvel to be a more active part of the Avengers, joining in their future battles leading up to Secret Wars.
8 Nick Fury Has Learned Nothing From Secret Invasion
Nick Fury makes his first post-Secret Invasion appearance in The Marvels, proving that he has learned nothing from his most recent interaction with the Skrulls. Despite being constantly betrayed by the Skrulls and losing several close allies because of his own mistakes, Fury continues to blindly trust the shapeshifting aliens and, in the process, puts loved ones in harm’s way.
One would think that losing both Talos and Maria Hill as a result of Gravik’s rebellion would have taught Fury to at least put his own life on the line when it comes to personal missions. However, he continues to put his loved ones in harm’s way throughout the events of The Marvels, resulting in Monica Rambeau’s disappearance at the end of the film. Once more, Fury’s own shortcomings have harmed everyone but himself.
7 New Asgard Is The Skrulls’ New Home
Monica Rambeau’s Full Timeline In The MCUAfter struggling to survive for decades after the Kree destroyed their homeworld, the Skrulls have migrated to yet another new home in New Asgard. Thanks to the benevolence of King Valkryie, the Skrulls were provided refuge in New Asgard after Dar-Benn destroyed their new homeworld of Tarnax. However, this solution is far from a permanent one.
The events of Secret Invasion made all alien lifeforms, including Asgardians and the Skrulls, unwelcome on Earth. Humanity will not be pleased with another batch of Skrull refugees arriving on the planet so soon after Gravik and his minions attempted to claim Earth as their own. The tension that follows could lead to war between humanity and the Skrulls or, even worse, between humanity and Asgard.
6 Ms. Marvel Is Officially Captain Marvel’s Sidekick
The MCU’s version of Kamala Khan will be Captain Marvel’s sidekick, fighting alongside her hero to protect the Earth. Before becoming Ms. Marvel, Kamala fantasized about meeting her icon, Carol Danvers, but never thought it would really happen. Now, after fighting side-by-side against Dar-Benn, Carol and Kamala seem to be inseparable.
Monica’s disappearance proved to be a significant bonding moment for Kamala and Carol, fusing them together for life. Kamala knows that Carol has lost virtually everyone she ever loved, with very few exceptions. With this knowledge, Kamala chooses to stay at Carol’s side, fighting as her sidekick even after the events of The Marvels. However, as the film’s final scene proves, this partnership isn’t exclusive.
5 The Kree-Skrull War May Start Again
Nick Fury’s Full Timeline In The MCU
The Marvels hints that the long-fought Kree-Skrull War could be on the verge of breaking out once more. The two rival empires had been at war for decades by the events of Captain Marvel, but things finally seemed to be reaching a peaceful conclusion in The Marvels–until Dar-Benn attacked the new Skrull homeworld of Tarnax.
Although both empires are at their weakest points, the Skrull and the Kree still hate each other just as much as they always have. After Dar-Benn’s vicious attack, the Skrulls will certainly be planning some kind of retaliation, which could lead to war breaking out throughout the galaxy once more.
4 The Young Avengers Are Finally Coming
The final scene of The Marvels confirmed once and for all that the Young Avengers are officially coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film ends with Kamala Khan approaching Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop, previously seen in Hawkeye, with an offer to join a new team. Kate seems eager to join, marking the beginning of the MCU’s Young Avengers.
There is no shortage of characters already in the MCU who could join Ms. Marvel’s team of Young Avengers, including Stature, Speed, Wiccan, Patriot, America Chavez, Kid Loki, Ironheart, Iron Lad, and more. The Young Avengers’ arrival also foreshadows a new age of the MCU, where multiple Avengers teams split up the duty of protecting Earth.
The film’s mid-credit scene includes some major hints about the future of the MCU after The Marvels. When Monica Rambeau traps herself in an alternate reality, no one knows precisely where she’ll end up. However, the mid-credits scene seems to answer this question with the appearance of Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, a character previously seen in Fox’s X-Men universe.
While Marvel Studios has yet to fully reveal whether or not this is the same universe in which the X-Men franchise is set, the chances seem high that this is the case. This seemingly confirms countless fan theories about the X-Men’s connection to the Multiverse Saga and the events of Avengers: Secret Wars. As such, audiences hoping for more crossovers between the two long-running Marvel franchises are sure to be delighted in years to come.
2 Maria Rambeau Is A Mutant In The Fox Universe
10 Characters Who Could Join The Marvels In The MCUYet another new version of Maria Rambeau makes her debut in The Marvels‘ mid-credit scene. In the scene, Monica is surprised to see her mother sitting beside her in a medical bay. However, this is not the Maria Rambeau that she once knew, but rather a superhero working alongside Charles Xavier’s mutant team, the X-Men.
While her superhero moniker hasn’t been officially revealed yet, Maria’s costume resembles that of Binary, a hero from Marvel Comics. Her presence at X-Mansion would imply that she is a mutant and a member of the X-Men, perhaps having joined in the years following the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past. As such, audiences will certainly see more of her character in future installments of the Multiverse Saga.
1 Secret Wars Will Be A Battle Between The MCU And Fox Universe
The Marvels‘ mid-credits scene finally includes a crossover between the MCU and Fox’s X-Men universe, which may yet collide during the events of Avengers: Secret Wars. After sacrificing herself to save both universes, Monica Rambeau wakes up in the custody of the X-Men, who are aware that she hails from a different reality.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness made it quite clear that extended contact between two universes will cause them to collide in an incursion event. With Monica stranded in the Fox universe, she puts both realities in tremendous danger as they draw closer and closer together. If they finally collide, there is no doubt that these two worlds will be forced to fight to the death for their own survival in Avengers: Secret Wars.
