Actor Mel Gibson’s career has witnessed its ups and downs, but he has always delivered outstanding performances in many movies despite his controversies. The actor, director, and producer first gained widespread recognition for his role as Max Rockatansky in the Mad Max franchise, establishing himself as an action hero in the early ’80s. He then went on to star in various blockbuster hits, becoming a household name.

The actor once explained what he thinks of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, subtly dissing the Spider-Man movies and hailing Guardians of the Galaxy and Iron Man as his favorite Marvel movies.

In May 2016, actor Mel Gibson appeared for an interview with The Guardian at the Cannes Film Festival. During the interview, Gibson was asked to share his views on superhero movies, and the actor replied,

“Some are good. Some are kind of funny… Guardians of the Galaxy. Or the first Iron Man.”

Gibson has always hated the idea of superhero movies, so it was quite surprising to see that he was actually a fan of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Further in the interview, Gibson added that some superhero movies are like “retreats,” highlighting that Spider-Man movies are like that,

“Some of them are just like retreats. I mean you can watch them do Spider-Man five times… There is a slight shift in film. But, then again, I think all films are suffering from people not being able to now open them with their name. It’s a different kind of business these days.”

Gibson might have changed his mind now as just a few months after this interview, the world was introduced to MCU’s new Spider-Man, Tom Holland.

In another interview with Deadline, Gibson attacked big-budget superhero movies, movies with a production of $200 million or more,

“I look at them and scratch my head. I’m really baffled by it. I think there’s a lot of waste, but maybe if I did one of those things with the green screens I’d find out different. I don’t know. Maybe they do cost that much. I don’t know. It seems to me that you could do it for less.”

When Gibson asked about the production cost of 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, he was told that it was $250 million, he then added,

“It’s a piece of sh*t,” Gibson explained, “I’m not interested in the stuff. Do you know what the difference between real superheroes and comic book superheroes is? Real superheroes didn’t wear spandex. So I don’t know. Spandex must cost a lot.”

Gibson also once revealed that he was approached for the role of Thor’s father in the MCU, but he turned it down.
