The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Five finale, Thunderbolts*, is set to feature Lewis Pullman as the Sentry, though Marvel has yet to confirm his character. Though Pullman remains coy about whether he’s playing the golden guardian with a dark twist, he admits he’s unsure whether his character is a hero or a villain.

Speaking with GamesRadar+, Pullman addressed his character’s traits in Thunderbolts* and whether he’s a hero or a villain in the movie. The Top Gun: Maverick actor insists he has no idea, claiming he’s embracing the “unknowns” that come with his role. “God, I would love to know. I genuinely, I don’t know,” Pullman said. “It’s one of the exciting parts about being invited into the whole universe is there’s a lot of unknowns, and you just kind of got to go with the flow and embrace the unknowns of it all.”

Superman Star Seemingly Confirmed to Appear in Thunderbolts*

One of the stars of the DCU’s Superman reboot is reportedly joining the MCU as well with a role in Thunderbolts*.

While Marvel and Pullman haven’t confirmed he will play the Sentry in the MCU, his comments are consistent with the character’s makeup. Sentry began as a hero in Marvel Comics shortly before The Fantastic Four emerged, with many equating his powers and traits to Superman. However, Sentry leaned into his monstrous alter ego, the Void, who launched a devastating attack on New York and caused him to try and erase his memory with the help of Reed Richards and Doctor Strange.

Pullman’s reported casting as the Sentry gained legitimacy following the release of the Thunderbolts* trailer, which saw him wearing scrubs, hinting at the character wearing his famous golden suit in the film. Additionally, Pullman introduces himself as Bob in the trailer. Sentry’s name in the comics is Robert Reynolds, which is another major clue that he will play the character.

Jonathan Majors Is Returning to the Big Screen After MCU Firing

A theatrical release window has been announced for Jonathan Majors’ next film.

Pullman’s expected portrayal of Sentry in Thunderbolts*comes after Steven Yeun dropped out of the role due to scheduling conflicts. Much like Pullman’s character, much of Thunderbolts* is shrouded in mystery, with the asterisk in the film’s title seemingly hinting at a big change happening to the eponymous antihero group and the MCU. The group of rebels and former villains embark on missions issued to them by the U.S. government in the movie. However, rumored plot details suggest they may be going up against government officials, with one reported scene teasing the demise of some Thunderbolts members following a double-cross by CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus).

Marvel’s Thunderbolts* also stars Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), David Harbour (Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian), Hannah John-Kamen (Ava Starr/Ghost), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova) and Wyatt Russell (John Walker/U.S. Agent). Superman star Wendell Pierce and Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Chris Bauer are the latest reported additions to the cast.

Thunderbolts* opens in theaters on May 2, 2025.
