Marvel’s Head of Television has confirmed that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will soon expand with the arrival of the superhero Nova. New details have emerged regarding Nova’s long-gestating upcoming series, including that it will take inspiration from shows like Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica.

Speaking to ComicBook.com about the upcoming release of Agatha All Along, Braud Winderbaum spoke about Nova and confirmed a series is in development, and Marvel is working hard to make Nova’s live action portrayal just right for fans of the character. “Nova‘s in development right now. We are. But I will say we’re developing more than we make,” Winderbaum said. “This is part of the new Marvel, but we should talk about this because at Marvel everything has a spotlight on it and everyone gets super excited and we love Nova. And we want to get it right. But it’s in development.

Acclaimed Horror Series Becomes Netflix Hit as Fans Await Season 3

AMC’s supernatural horror anthology series finds new life after arriving on Netflix, with fans eagerly awaiting a third season.

Winderbaum went on to speak about other series which have been influential in the Nova show’s creation, name-dropping Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica. “I’ve been really inspired by what [Star] Trek has been doing over the last few years. I think their shows are incredible. That’s why we hired Terry [Matalas] to do Vision Quest with us. But the Nova that’s being developed right now, it’s an amazing ensemble piece. […] It’s got shades of Trek, it’s got shades of Battlestar, but also has, it also feels like if you know those comics, you know how heated, let’s say, that Richard Rider kind of world can get, and it certainly embraces all of that.”

Marvel’s Nova (Richard Rider) first appeared in The Man Called Nova #1 back in Sept. 1976. The character was created by Marv Wolfman and John Romita Sr. and is a member of the intergalactic police force called the Nova Corps. The character has access to the Nova Force, granting him superhuman strength, speed and durability, regenerative healing, flight and numerous other powers. Throughout Marvel’s comics history, Nova has been affiliated with many teams, including The New Warriors, Secret Avengers and even the Guardians of the Galaxy.

In 2011, Marvel introduced a new Nova in its comics named Sam Alexander, who was also a member of the Nova Corps. The character was based on the original Richard Rider’s Nova and was created by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness. Sam Alexander made his first appearance in Marvel Point One #1 and was later affiliated with the Young Avengers, New Warriors, and S.H.I.E.L.D. among others. It remains to be seen which version of the character will appear in Marvel Studios’ upcoming television series.
