Summary
Musashi Miyamoto is a historical figure who becomes a Ghost Rider fighting against Mephisto in Edo Japan alongside the Avengers.
Fans should hope Ghost Ronin gets his own comic series, imagining him as a boogeyman to villains in Japan, battling samurai and yokai spirits.
Ghost Rider’s epic “Ghost Ronin” form is back in a new piece of eye-popping fan artwork. The Ghost Rider, a mantle/demonic entity named Zarathos, has been Mephisto’s chosen collector of souls for millennia. With so many different hosts possessed by the mad demon Zarathos, this multiverse fanart reminds fans there is a Ghost Rider fighting crime as a wandering samurai.
In a recent Instagram post, artist Kode Abdo(@bosslogic) struck gold with his artwork involving a Japanese variant of Ghost Rider. This non-blue flame version of Ghost Ronin stands in a dark and misty cave, while the red flames of vengeance burn brightly through his body and katana. Ghost Ronin fits the part by dressing as a burning samurai with armor wrapped in black Hellfire chains.
As the pink cherry blossom petals dance in the wind, the Ghost Ronin looks to be lamenting a sinful world in need of a savior or, rather, an executioner. A sorrowful image fit for a tragic figure such as the Ghost Rider.
Marvel’s Samurai Ghost Rider is The Multiverse’s Greatest Gift
While the Avengers’ own Multiverse has been mostly disappointing until now, the Ghost Ronin hits all the right notes to leave its mark as a character.
Musashi Miyamoto aka The Ghost Ronin, Explained
One Of Many Ghost Riders Throughout History
The Ghost Ronin aka Musashi Miyamoto, the legendary ronin and artist from Edo period Japan, is possibly the most interesting host of Ghost Rider. Debuting in 2021’s Avengers #50 by Jason Aaron and Carlos Pacheco, Miyamoto reveals himself to the time-displaced Avengers, chasing down the devil himself, Mephisto. The Samurai of Vengeance possesses all the powers of the present-day Ghost Rider, including Hellfire control and soul reading, but wields his powers through his single-bladed katana. Alongside Captain America, Thor, and Captain Marvel, Ghost Ronin joins the rest of the Avengers in fighting Mephisto in Edo Japan. In every era of time, the Ghost Rider/Zarathos always fights against the Devil and is a lone wolf in need of allies.
This historical figure, Miyamoto, makes for a potent and wise ally for the Avengers. Throughout history, Mephisto has made Zarathos/Ghost Rider into a personal slave out of spite of the actual angelic Spirits of Vengeance. Mephisto targets tortured souls, lost and searching for a better life, like Johnny Blaze, Robbie Reyes, and even Musashi Miyamoto. Miyamoto makes a deal with Mephisto to become a Ghost Rider, but one who chooses to punish criminals and trespassers of sin as a samurai. A Ghost Rider who follows the noble samurai code of Bushido, but is forever damned to Hell due to Zarathos and Mephisto’s control, could use his own stand-alone series.
Ghost Ronin Needs His Own Comic
So Much Potential In A Marvel Samurai Series
A series about a ronin cursed with the powers of a demonic soul hunter fighting against historical villains and making his version of the Avengers in Japan would be amazing. Some of Ghost Rider’s best moments have been team-ups with the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and the Avengers. A series focusing on the lonely swordsman Miyamoto becoming a boogeyman to vagabonds and corrupt daimyo in Edo Japan could open a gateway to many possible stories. The Ghost Ronin could storm a castle full of rogue samurai, meet other super-powered ronin, and battle legendary yokai spirits from Japanese folklore. This breathtaking artwork reminds fans that Ghost Ronin is a formidable Ghost Rider and a powerful samurai who deserves more adventures in the comics.
