Over the last few years, the expansion of Venom lore has revealed that Spider-Man‘s former ‘evil’ costume is actually connected to the power of the primordial void. This evolution has taken Venom’s former host Eddie Brock from lethal vigilante to literal god – but now that Spider-Man is reclaiming his black costume, it’s his turn to wield near-infinite power.
In recently revealed solicit information for the upcoming Venom War: Spider-Man, fans get to see Peter Parker transform into the King in Black. This title is used to denote the God of Symbiotes, who is able to transcend time and space, harnessing all symbiote matter past, present and future. While it used to describe Knull, the creator of symbiote life, it has since been taken by Eddie Brock and the future symbiote villain Meridius.

PETER PARKER – KING IN BLACK! We’ve seen what happens if Eddie get the symbiote… We’ve seen what happens when Dylan get the symbiote… Clearly, everything would work out if a great guy like Peter held onto it. Right? RIGHT?!?
The Venom War event will see former Venom Eddie Brock, current Venom Dylan Brock and the symbiote’s original earthly host Peter Parker vying for supremacy. Whoever wins will become the new King in Black, but there’s a major problem – Marvel’s glimpses of the future suggest that if Eddie or Dylan win, things will get very dark. Now, it seems Marvel will reveal the future should Peter Parker win the Venom War, and it doesn’t look any better.
Someone Finally Beats Spider-Man to the Punchline (Thanks to Time Travel)
Spider-Man has a joke for everything – unless, of course, someone were to steal his joke and use it the day before, thanks to time travel.
Spider-Man Is the Rightful Heir to the King in Black’s Throne
Eddie Brock Found Out the Truth in Venom #18, by Al Ewing and Cafu
In Venom #18, Venom argued with his future self about his place in the grand scheme of things as a literal god. Far from being comforted, Eddie was informed that the role was actually meant to belong to Spider-Man, but cosmic coincidence meant that Eddie ended up possessing it instead. Now, Peter Parker is actually getting the title he was seemingly “born for,” but Marvel’s issue summary suggests that far from living up to it, Peter would be corrupted by this much power.
In recent comics, the Venom symbiote abandoned Dylan, worrying it was putting the young hero in harm’s way. The symbiote returned to Spider-Man, reasoning that Peter Parker is the one person who will never again be tempted by the darkness it inspires in its hosts. Sadly, it seems the symbiote was wrong, and that its heroic decision will only serve to drag Spider-Man into the growing conflict for the crown of the King in Black.
Spider-Man Is Back in Black, and the Universe Could Pay the Price
The Symbiote Returned to Peter Parker Because It Believes in His Heroism
When Venom first appeared, Spider-Man didn’t know just what he was getting into by wearing his new suit. This time, however, he knows that to fight the coming Venom War, he needs to embrace his dark side. Hopefully, Peter Parker won’t lose his lighter, comical side in the effort, as he undergoes one last temptation with the black suit. Spider-Man is definitely the most likely candidate to resist corruption and become a worthy King in Black, but that’s seeming less and less probable. Marvel’s hint that Spider-Man would be calamitous as the King in Black establishes the dark truth behind Venom War‘s conflict – whoever wins, it seems that the universe will pay the price.
