The new Sorcerer Supreme promises to be a ground-breaking change to Doctor Strange lore, and the Marvel Universe in general. The publisher’s new Ultimate line has given fans shocking new visions of its greatest heroes. In a first look at Ultimate Black Panther #9, the Ultimate Sorcerer Supreme makes their debut. Much is unknown about this new character, but it is guaranteed to be a bold new take on the concept.
Marvel shared a first look at October’s Ultimate titles, including Ultimate Black Panther #9. The book will be written by Bryan Hill and drawn by Stefano Caselli. The solicitation for the issue reads:
The Ultimate Sorcerer Supreme? Magic, mysticism and metal clash! But the source of this magic is not what it appears to be, due to the Maker’s reshaping of the world… Black Panther wrestles with this new anti-vibranium—and deals with the devastating consequences! What is the price of such life-bringing power? And what is the price of trying to master it?
Marvel has not revealed any additional information.
However, Caselli’s cover, shared here, shows Black Panther and his allies confronting an off-camera adversary, whose arms glow with the same magic reminiscent of Doctor Strange.
The New Ultimate Universe’s Origin, Explained
The Maker Created a World, and Heroes, He Can Control
Marvel’s new Ultimate line can trace its roots back to the publisher’s original Ultimate imprint. The Maker, the first Ultimate Reed Richards as well as one of that universe’s last survivors, found another Earth in the Multiverse that he reshaped in his image. The Maker prevented certain heroes, such as Spider-Man, from obtaining their powers. Others, such as the Hulk, he brought under his control. Howard Stark opposed the Maker, and sealed him away in a prison, where he would be confined for 18 months. Now, a new generation of heroes has risen up, with a mandate to save the world.
Magic is hard to control in any universe, but the Maker, whose intellect is rumored to rival Earth-616 Reed Richards, is no doubt prepared for sorcerers.
The Maker left little to chance when shaping his new Earth. He knew the Hulk, in his normal form, would be hard to control. Therefore, he ensured they took a form he could manipulate. Likewise, a Sorcerer Supreme could pose a similar issue. Magic is hard to control in any universe, but the Maker, whose intellect is rumored to rival Earth-616 Reed Richards, is no doubt prepared for sorcerers. Just how the Maker compensated for sorcerers is not known, but so far, none have been seen in Marvel’s new Ultimate line.

What Powers This New Sorcerer Supreme?
Is Anti-Vibranium The Key to the New Sorcerer Supreme?
Another notable point is the source of this new Sorcerer Supreme’s powers, which the solicitation says do not come from the usual source. The solicitation mentions an “anti-Vibranium.” It is worth noting that on Earth 616 Vibranium has anti-magic properties. With the new Ultimate universe presenting radical new takes on Marvel icons, it is possible that the new Sorcerer Supreme draws their power from the anti-Vibranium. This mashing up of science and magic is a huge departure from previous Sorcerer Supremes such as Doctor Strange, and represents a ground-breaking new approach to the character.
