Spider-Man is one of the biggest names in TV, with several adaptations that collectively earned billions of dollars. Spider-Man’s status as a celebrity and hero extends back much further than the MCU. The character first appeared in comics in 1962 when the hero swung into the hearts of comic readers everywhere. The boy hero who could be anyone, Peter Parker, was a creation of comics legend Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko.

However, the extraordinary popularity of the character proved to be so much bigger than anyone could have predicted. For decades, the Friendly Neighborhood Web-Slinger became the most popular character from Marvel Comics, and the character has starred in numerous cartoons and live-action projects ever since. But just in the last 25 years, with the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, The Amazing Spider-Man duology, the MCU, and the Spider-Verse, all of which feature the Web Warrior as the lead, 10 films have managed to pull in just shy of $9 billion.

10 Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

Box Office Total: $375,464,627

While the Spider-Verse movies have proven to be one of the most universally celebrated, critically acclaimed, and visually stimulating franchises of the lot, they have also been the lowest earners. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a wild card which did not have the same built-in audience that the live-action films enjoyed. Despite the incredible visuals, the film earned significantly less than any other entry in the series, with just $375 million.

However, Into the Spider-Verse was no doubt one of the most successful films featuring the hero in a new light with Miles Morales as the primary protagonist, and other variants joining him, including a slightly older, washed out version of the original hero, Peter Parker. At the 2019 Academy Awards, Into the Spider-Verse managed to nab the award for Best Animated Feature, which for the preceding 6 consecutive years was held by Disney. Despite the lower box office return, Into the Spider-Verse made an impression.

9 Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse

Box Office Total: $681,222,435

This was proven when the sequel was released in 2023, five years later, and the total box office saw a dramatic increase. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse continued the story of Miles Morales and saw him come face to face with even more of the Spidey’s from the vast multiverse. Once again, the movie was nominated for the Best Animated Feature, but it lost out to the Japanese fantasy film from Studio Ghibli, The Boy and the Heron.

However, the sheer jump in box office numbers evidenced that the Spider-Verse was the most consistently popular and profitable branch of films from Sony Entertainment. Not only was this entry a far more ambitious entry than the original, with several different styles of animation employed for the various Spiders, but the story extends over a two-part adventure that is set to conclude the Spider-Verse trilogy. Despite this, the live-action movies still managed to lead the way in terms of box office.

8 The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Box Office Total: $709,672,746

Coming in at the bottom of the pile, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, starring Andrew Garfield, is one of the most heartbreaking and emotional Spider-Man movies. However, most of this emotion is delivered in one scene in the third act when Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacey is killed, and Spidey narrowly fails to save her. The rebooted duology suffered from replacing the widely praised Sam Raimi trilogy, but it still managed to carve out a fanbase, and secure Garfield as a fan favorite Spider-Man for many.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was packed with action, and earned a little over $700 million at the box office. This figure is absolutely nothing to be sniffed at, and considering when it came out in 2014, this figure landed it in the top 10 earners for the year against stiff competition like two major MCU releases, a Transformers movie, a Hobbit movie, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and the penultimate chapter in The Hunger Games series, the movie performed exceptionally well.

7 The Amazing Spider-Man

Box Office Total: $758,576,824

Narrowly beating out its own sequel, Garfield’s debut as the Web Swinger managed to earn a total of just under $760 million. Garfield delivered an impressive turn as the heroic Peter Parker, but there was some discussion around his casting as the nerdy and unpopular Parker. Despite Garfield delivering a significantly cooler version of the hero than audiences were familiar with, the movie managed to draw big crowds, even with the alternative origin story which made Parker a chosen special hero, which failed to deliver the everyman hero promise that was always tied to Spidey in the comics.

Once again, the movie came in a strong position for 2012, with the movie getting the seventh-highest total for the year. And again, the movie faced stiff competition with The Avengers, Skyfall, The Dark Knight Rises, The Hobbit, and the final entry in the Twilight saga. Regardless, The Amazing Spider-Man duology remains the lowest earning live-action version of a Spider-Man story, which only further serves to show how strong the IP and the character are.

6 Spider-Man 2

Box Office Total: $795,888,127

Getting into the real heavy hitter territory, Spider-Man 2 from Sam Raimi, starring Tobey Maguire, managed to earn just shy of $800 million, which puts it at the bottom of the trilogy for box office totals. Where Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man shined and his Peter Parker felt disconnected from the comics, Maguire was a perfect casting as Spidey, although slightly older than what fans of the comics were used to. The second entry in the trilogy saw Parker undergo an identity crisis as his life as Spider-Man appeared to leave his life as Peter in pieces.

Spider-Man 2 may be the lowest earner of the Raimi trilogy, but compared to the rest of the box office in 2004, it snagged third place, a significant jump up from all of the previously mentioned entries. Spider-Man 2 narrowly missed out on the second place spot to Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and was over $100 million shy of the top spot, which went to Shrek 2. Ultimately, the film was a huge success, and spurred on interest in the series ahead of the more mixed third entry.

5 Spider-Man

But before discussing the divisive Spider-Man 3, Spider-Man claims the next spot in this listing with a little over $820 million, a small increase over the sequel. This 2002 movie set the tone for Spider-Man, and in many ways shaped the character over the following decades. With his new-found powers, Peter Parker had to learn to balance his gifts with his responsibilities, even in the face of tragedy. With Willem Dafoe playing the main antagonist, Green Goblin, this movie became an instant comic book classic.

However, it still ended up in the third place spot at the box office in 2002. Once again, the movie lost out narrowly to Harry Potter, while the highest earning movie of that year was the epic fantasy movie by Peter Jackson, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. But, it played a pivotal part in paving the way for more superhero movies to take over in Hollywood, and established Raimi as a credible director even outside the horror genre.

4 Spider-Man: Homecoming

The MCU proved to be a massive titan of industry when it established a new era of superhero films, with increasing returns at the box office over the first 10 or so years. Spider-Man: Homecoming was aptly named as it saw the character brought back into production by Marvel Studios. However, Sony still retained the rights for the film and, by extension, the box office. Due to the origin story being repeated so many times, Homecoming avoided repeating the characters’ history and opted to follow a hero who is more comfortable with his powers, but still learning what it means to be a hero.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was younger, more agile and athletic, and his performance as Peter Parker was authentically dorky and fun. Finally, delivering one of the most comic-accurate versions of the character to date paid off, with the first movie pulling in almost $880 million at the box office. Despite being the highest grossing Spidey movie up to that point in 2017, it now faced stiffer competition at the box office, which placed it sixth overall for that year behind several beloved franchise reboots and sequels.

3 Spider-Man 3

10 years prior, in 2007, Sam Raimi delivered his final chapter in the Spider-Man tapestry with Spider-Man 3. Despite criticism for the overstuffed film which featured several villains, Spider-Man 3 managed to close the door on Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker story, and face some of his most intense rivals yet. To this date, it remains the only live-action film where Spidey and Venom face off, and the film provided several moments that have gone down in meme history with Bully Maguire, the emo iteration of Peter Parker which was a result of the Venom symbiote.

Spider-Man 3 delivered huge numbers at the box office with just shy of $900 million, but was again slightly behind a Harry Potter movie and the third entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. However, none of these movies cracked the billion dollar ceiling, which shows just how tight the race to the top was. Spider-Man 3 immediately preceded the birth of the MCU in 2008, and with Raimi returning over a decade later to direct a Doctor Strange movie, its influence was clear.

2 Spider-Man: Far From Home

However, finally crossing the billion dollar threshold, it can only be the MCU. Spider-Man: Far From Home follows Peter after the tragic events of Avengers: Endgame, releaseing just a few months after the epic conclusion to the Infinity Saga. Mourning his mentor, Tony Stark, and trying to balance a life as the teenage Parker, and the superheroic Avenger Spider-Man, Peter hopes to blow off steam on a European school trip. But when Fury shows up, and a series of attacks across Europe, Peter can’t help but swing into action.

While Far From Home crossed the billion dollar ceiling, it still landed fourth overall for 2019. However, with Avengers: Endgame, the live-action The Lion King, and Frozen II taking the top three spots, it’s no wonder why. Despite the slightly lower position than the previous film, it did manage to top another 5 movies in that same year, which all earned over $1 billion. This is no small feat, and one that continues to prove Spider-Man’s strength as a franchise.

1 Spider-Man: No Way Home

Box Office Total: $1,908,532,719

Finally, the highest earning movie in the franchise was its own epic event film, Spider-Man: No Way Home. It is incredibly fitting that the highest earning title from Spider-Man should also be the one that reunited the three live-action actors, Maguire, Garfield, and Holland. With Spidey’s identity revealed to the world, Peter’s life begins to spin out of control, but with the help of one Doctor Strange, he hopes to put everything back to the way it used to be. However, magic rarely works out exactly as one would hope, and Spidey’s spell split the multiverse.

Earning just shy of $2 billion, No Way Home is, by far, the highest earning entry in the history of Spider-Man. And, by extension, it landed the movie the top spot on the worldwide box office for 2021, on the heels of a global pandemic, when the movie held the top spot with over a $1 billion dollar lead on the next entry. Spider-Man may be just a kid from Queens, but the hero came a long way to leading a movie that holds the current seventh spot on the global box office records of all time with Spider-Man: No Way Home.
