Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine is rectifying one mistake that the recent Marvel movies have been making. Shawn Levy, the director of the film, has promised that Deadpool 3 will follow along the paths of earlier Marvel movies, where character-driven plots were given more importance.

Fans are happy with this revelation, as they yearn for more pre-Endgame types of Marvel films. While the film may include numerous cameos from previous X-Men franchises and the MCU, Levy shared that they will not become the entire story of the film.

Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Shawn Levy, and others involved with the upcoming MCU film, Deadpool & Wolverine, spoke about the film in detail in EW‘s latest cover story. When asked about the story of the film, director Shawn Levy shared that the film will be like the earlier Marvel movies.

Shawn Levy revealed that Deadpool & Wolverine will be a character-driven story like the earlier MCU films where “the character stakes are more important than the global MCU stakes.” The upcoming film will feature Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine reluctantly teaming up for a multiverse-saving mission.

The film will certainly feature numerous cameos, but they will not pose a problem to the character-driven story. Levy shared with EW:

We didn’t want any of the cameos or characters to be the story of the movie. But they are peppered in throughout.

Levy intends to stay clear of the recent Marvel curse that has been ruining the reputation of the franchise that gave us Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers Endgame. Even Marvel execs had admitted in a recent interview that 2023 did not go as expected for the studio.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Marvel co-president Louis D’Esposito admitted that “it’s been a rough time” in 2023. Two of the films from the studio last year made losses at the box office, including Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels. The television side did a worse job with critically panned series like Secret Invasion.

The biggest mistake committed by these projects was the focus on the interconnected storyline rather than the individual storylines. It appears that Levy will not be making this big mistake.

Shawn Levy’s revelation about his film following earlier Marvel movies’ suit has made many fans excited. One fan on X shared that they wanted to see more personal stakes in an MCU film after Endgame, adding that it was hard to match the MCU Phase 3 finale movies. Another fan shared that Levy’s take on the film actually made sense.

One fan shared a meme showing that a character-driven story was way better than clustering too many superhero stories in one film. Another fan shared that the studio seemed to be learning from their recent mistakes. Some fans shared that their curiosity has been piqued about the film after Levy’s update. Some of the fan reactions read:

The more personal stakes are the only kinda of movies I want to see after Endgame. You can’t top half of everyone being dusted away.

Besides Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson and Hugh Jackman’s Logan, the story will also focus on a unique Marvel villain, Cassandra Nova, played by Emma Corrin.
