A new Red Hulk has arrived, armed with a cosmic power source that makes the Hulk’s gamma-based abilities look pathetic. This summer, superstar writer Steve Orlando continues his redefining of the 2099 universe with Annihilation 2099. This five-issue miniseries will introduce new characters to the mix, including an exciting new take on the Red Hulk, one wielding power on level with the gods.
Marvel shared a first look at Annihilation 2099 on their website. In issue three, Orlando is joined by artist Pete Woods to tell a story of a new Red Hulk. After leading a mining trip to Ego the Living Planet, Ross Romero is somehow transformed into the Red Hulk. This new incarnation has powers transcending the Green Hulk’s by a considerable factor. In addition to super-strength, this new Red Hulk can jump through hyperspace.
No sooner than Ross gets these powers, he is on a collision course with Terrax, a former herald of Galactus.
No Hulk Has Ever Taken Their Abilites From the Power Primordial
The first Red Hulk was General Thunderbolt Ross. Frustrated with his numerous defeats and embarrassments at the hands of the Hulk, Ross subjects himself to special treatment by the Leader and MODOK, which transforms him into the Red Hulk. Appearing at a time when the Hulk was missing in action, the Red Hulk went on a rampage across the Marvel Universe. Much like the new Red Hulk, Ross had powers that Banner did not, namely energy absorbing abilities. These extra powers made the Red Hulk perhaps the deadliest Hulk ever.
The Power Primordial, the power source Marvel’s new Red Hulk draws from, is one of the most powerful ever. Very little is known about the Power Primordial, but some have speculated that it rivals Galactus’ Power Cosmic. The Elders of the Universe, who count the Grandmaster and the Collector among their ranks, also utilize the Power Primordial. It is believed that the Power may have been created by the Elders. Each Elder is the last member of their race, and the Power Primordial consists of those races’ collective lifeforces. Whatever the case, it is an immensely powerful force.
DC Invented Red Hulk 10 Years Before Marvel (& Made Him More Powerful)
While Red Hulk has become an iconic character in Marvel Comics, DC had its own much stronger version of the villain a decade earlier.
The Power Primodrial Is Still a Huge Unknown–Meaning There Could Be No Limit to Red Hulk’s Powers
Will It Be Enough to Defeat a Former Herald of Galactus?
And now the raw energy of the Power Primordial belongs to the new Red Hulk. The previous Red Hulk used his extra abilities to spread chaos and destruction. While much about Ross Romero, the new Red Hulk, remains a secret, the cover to Annihilation 2099 #3 shows him an all-out fight with Terrax. A former herald of Galactus, Terrax wields the Power Cosmic. This puts Terrax on equal footing with the Red Hulk. However, the Red Hulk’s sheer power and strength may be too much Terrax–and even the Hulk.
