In a move fans never thought they’d see, DC and Marvel shocked the comics world when they announced they would be reprinting their previous crossover material in two new omnibus collections this year. The DC Versus Marvel omnibus will collect previous crossovers from the ’80s and ’90s, and DC/Marvel: The Amalgam Age will collect the DC Versus Marvel series along with the Amalgam titles.

The DC/Marvel Crossover Amalgam Universe Is Back

Spinning out of 1996’s epic DC Versus Marvel crossover series, the Amalgam Comics line depicted a world created from a merging of the two biggest superhero universes in comics. Wolverine and Batman merged to become the Dark Claw, Superman and Captain America became Super-Soldier and a host of other characters came together in a universe owned equally by both companies. Featuring work by writers and artists like Mark Waid, Kurt Busiek, John Romita, Jr. and John Byrne, the Amalgam line was successful enough to receive another run of one-shot issues in 1997, which were all collected in now long out-of-print trade paperbacks.

Few things say ‘peak 90s’ than these designs from the AMALGAM universe,” Lee writes in his post, highlighting why he’s the perfect artist to create new artwork for the shared DC/Marvel line. For many fans, Lee is the definitive artist for many Marvel and DC characters, with his work on titles like X-Men and Batman standing out as some of the all-time best. This is why it’s particularly exciting to see Lee render characters like Dark Claw, Super-Soldier. Doctor Strangefate, the Challengers of the Fantastic and Thanoseid for the first time. Lee even manages to throw Lobo the Duck into the mix!

Jim Lee Is the PERFECT Choice To Create New Amalgam Art

According to Lee, this new piece of Amalgam art is just the beginning. “Next up…the covers to the Marvel-DC crossover collections!” Lee writes, implying that he’ll be providing an all-new cover for the companion DC Versus Marvel omnibus, as well. With so much attention gained after the initial announcement, fans must ask the question: is it possible that Marvel and DC will come together again to create new crossover material? Might fans expect to see a continuation of the Amalgam Comics line in the near future? Only time will tell, but for now it’s nice to see Jim Lee creating all-new Marvel/DC crossover art for fans to enjoy.
