Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel, is one of Marvel Comics’ most popular teenage superheroes. First introduced in Captain Marvel (vol. 7) #14, by Kelly Sue DeConnick, Scott Hepburn, Gerardo Sandoval, Andy Troy, and Joe Caramagna, Kamala Khan followed in the footsteps of her hero, Carol Danvers, to become one of the greatest heroes in the Marvel Universe. Since then, the character has blossomed, and has appeared across the Marvel Multiverse and in a variety of media.
Portrayed by Iman Vellani, Ms. Marvel joined the MCU in the 2022 TV series of the same name. Kamala returns in The Marvels, where audiences can enjoy Vellani’s version of the character alongside other Marvel superheroes. However, Marvel is known for its multiverse, and whether she’s in comics, television, film, or video games, no two Ms. Marvel variants are quite the same.

As a part of the massive 2015 Secret Wars comic storyline, Marvel introduced several alternate versions of popular Marvel characters in short-lived spinoffs. Among these was Agent Khan, a variant of Kamala Khan hailing from Earth-61610. In this reality, Kamala is an agent of Queen Medusa in the Inhuman Civil War against the rebellious Black Bolt.
Agent Khan may have the same powers and abilities as her Earth-616 counterpart but she’s also undergone a complete redesign, with a darker costume resembling Black Widow’s. Agent Khan became an important ally of Queen Medusa during the war, though the fate of their world was left in question after God Emperor Doom collapsed the Multiverse into a single Battleworld. Nonetheless, Agent Khan gave readers a chance to see what Ms. Marvel was like as an Inhuman agent who used her abilities for subterfuge more often than for superhero antics.

As impressive as the mainstream Ms. Marvel may be as a superhero, her Earth-18366 comics counterpart is undoubtedly one of the most accomplished Kamala Khan variants in the vast Marvel multiverse. An older version of Kamala, this variant retired from the world of superheroics and went into politics and was eventually elected President of the United States.
President Khan represents what Kamala Khan’s life could be like without her Ms. Marvel identity, proving that she is just as intelligent and driven in her civilian life as she is when it comes to superheroics. This version of Ms. Marvel is a wise and industrious leader, making the Earth-18366 reality one of the better worlds in the Marvel multiverse.

Marvel Comics’ Exiles comic series introduced one of the darkest versions of Kamala Khan. Hailing from Earth-81111, this Ms. Marvel variant had a happy life with her husband, Bruno Carrelli, and their daughter. However, Kamala’s family was brutally murdered by Sabretooth during the Third World War between the mutants and the X-Men and she became the vigilante known as Khan.
Khan joins the third incarnation of the Exiles, a team of alternate-reality versions of known Marvel characters, to save the multiverse from utter destruction. Wielding a specially made Biokinetic Polymer Suit to supplement her superpowers, which are mostly the same as her Earth-616 counterpart, she’s grimmer and more mature than her other variants. Unfortunately, this version of Kamala was killed by a damaged atomic bomb while she was trying to save a city from the Red Skull.

Kamala Kang is a bizarre and unorthodox version of Ms. Marvel, her universe’s variant of Kang the Conqueror. Introduced during the Infinity Wars comics storyline, Kamala Kang was exposed to Chronogen Mists rather than the Inhumans’ Terrigen Mists, as she was in the 616-continuity. As a result, she became a cosmically powered being rather than an Inhuman.
Kamala Kang retains the “embiggening” powers of her Earth-616 counterpart but she uses them to expand her cosmic perception, allowing her to stretch her consciousness across various eras and alternate realities. While not a major character in Marvel Comics, Kamala Kang is certainly one of the most unique variants of Kamala Khan.

Kamala Khan appears in Marvel’s Avengers, a game that was meant to kick off Marvel’s shared universe of video games. Voiced by Sandra Saad, Kamala is a major character in the “Reassemble” campaign, where she is accidentally exposed to Terrigen mists when Taskmaster attacks an Avengers Day celebration. The mists activate Kamala’s latent Inhuman gene, causing her to go through terrigenesis and emerge as the new superhero, Ms. Marvel.
As Ms. Marvel, Kamala begins working with the Avengers, who teach her the basics of becoming a superhero. She helps them defeat the sinister Taskmaster and M.O.D.O.K. before officially joining their ranks at the end of the campaign. This video game version of Ms. Marvel retains the personality of her comic book counterpart, whose enthusiasm is accented by a genuine heroic streak throughout the story.

Hard Light Creation
Kamala Khan, portrayed by Iman Vellani, made her MCU debut in the Ms. Marvel Disney+ series, which aired in 2022. Here, Kamala is a high school student in Jersey City, obsessed with all things related to the Avengers, especially Captain Marvel. Her life changes after she dons an old family heirloom, a bracelet that activates her latent superpowers and allows her to become Ms. Marvel.
Introduced in Phase 4 of the MCU, this Kamala Khan is quite different than her comic book counterpart. While they share a lot of the same personality traits, Kamala’s powers involve the creation of three-dimensional “hard light” holograms, which she occasionally uses to emulate her “embiggening” powers in the comics. This version of Kamala Khan is also a mutant, not an Inhuman, as she is in Marvel Comics, making her a potential bridge the the X-Men in the MCU.

The original Kamala Khan from Marvel Comics is a resident of Earth-616. A major fan of Carol Danvers’s Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel is known for her “embiggening” powers, which let her both stretch her body and increase its size and mass. The original version of Kamala Khan, Ms. Marvel gained her powers from Terrigen Mist exposure, making her an Inhuman.
Kamala Khan has become one of Marvel Comics’ most popular newer characters, serving on major teams like the Avengers, the Young Avengers, the Inhumans, and even the X-Men. Like many heroes, Kamala has undergone many trials, including multiple deaths, but has always emerged stronger than ever. The character is most beloved for her endearing personality. She’s a true friend and an even truer hero, regardless of the challenges she faces.
Ms. Marvel has thrived in starring roles in the MCU and in the Marvel Comics Multiverse, from the villainous Kamala Kang to the Exiles’ Khan. Read More
