The Golden Globe Awards are set to introduce two new categories with the very next ceremony, in order to honor box office successes and stand-up acts, thus, buzzing the entertainment industry with anticipation. One of these awards will once again unite one of the biggest double-feature cinematic spectacles, the “Barbenheimer.”

The announcement came from the newly formed Golden Globes Organization, which is taking over the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) that had been organizing the ceremony since the inaugural awards in 1943. While the accolade Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television will honor television specials of over 30 minutes, the Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement aims to honor films that are often overlooked in the existing categories and often referred to as “popcorn entertainment.” Hence, two of the year’s three biggest blockbusters, Barbie and Oppenheimer, will lead the nominees, once again facing off against each other.

The Box Office Achievement Award, however, would not honor just any film with impressive box office, but those who have also garnered immense global acclaim for their exceptional creative content. As per the official rules, the movies do not have to be among the highest-grossing movies but have worldwide audience support. In order to clinch a nomination, they must have achieved a global $150 million in box office haul, with a significant portion of a minimum of $100 million coming from the North American market. Additionally, they could also enter the race by gaining substantial digital streaming viewership, as recognized by trusted industry sources.

The nominations will consist of eight contenders, with Oppenheimer and Barbie, likely facing strong competition from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse, while two more superhero movies, The Marvels and Aquaman and the Last Kingdom, could also make the list after their release. Since the criteria would still create obstacles for the more recent titles that are still in the run, it has been decided to allow movies released after November, to qualify based on the estimated figures from industry experts.

As the president of the Golden Globes organization, Helen Hoehne, expressed, “We’re thrilled to honor their brilliance alongside outstanding motion picture and television performances of the year. Additionally, we’re proud to recognize the hard work and innovation that goes into making a film that is both a blockbuster and artistically exceptional.”

Tim Gray, the Golden Globes EVP, emphasized that the new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award signifies a well-deserved recognition for films that have not traditionally received their due among industry accolades. “These films have typically not been recognized among industry awards but they should be.”

It should be noted that had this award been introduced prior to the pandemic, Disney may have held an upper hand in this category, thanks to their consistent box office dominance, particularly with powerhouse entities like Pixar and Marvel Studios, which amassed multiple billion dollars sums every single year with titles like Avengers, Frozen, and Star Wars. Similarly, last year’s Top Gun: Maverick might also have missed out on the opportunity due to the timing, although it did receive a nomination for Best Motion Picture – Drama, along with Avatar: The Way of Water, another multibillion-dollar movie.

The 81st Golden Globe Awards will take place on Jan. 7, 2024.
