Most comic fans will happily list out all the beloved animal companions in any series, including heroes like Krypto and Jeff the Land Shark. However, there are a shocking number of cats living in the comic book world. Perhaps their nine lives make them a good addition?

Be warned, the rabbit hole of cats in comics goes deep. While not every superhero has a pet cat, it can certainly feel like every comic book character is a cat lover at times. Alternative universes open even more doors to introduce feline friends, meaning there are many faces to remember.

The civilians of Steven Mouser’s universe will never forget about the great battle of the Sca-vengers versus Moletron, or the time they saved everyone from the Masked Marauder.No matter where this hero goes or what form he takes, he’s doing everything in his power to protect those around him. One could even say he has a personality similar to Damian.

Niels, also known as Hairball, has an origin story not dissimilar to many superheroes. He used to be an ordinary housecat. Until one day, he was exposed to kinetic energy bubbles. If that origin story sounds familiar, it should. He shares the same fate as Speedball, his human owner. Together, they gained kinetic superpowers: Robbie became Speedball, while Niels became Hairball. Yes, he really tried to come up with a name that matched with his owner’s.

Years later, Hairball would join the Pet Avengers alongside Throg, Redwing, and Lockheed.They were tasked to find and protect the Infinity Gems at all costs. When Robbie changed his name to Penance, Niels likewise changed his name, this time to P-Cat, aka the Penitent Puss.

One common appearance is Isis, one of Selina’s beloved cats. Isis first appeared in Batman: The Animated Series in the episode titled “The Cat and the Claw, Part I” in 1992.

Since then, Isis has made her way into comic book form.It makes sense that Selina would have at least one loyal feline willing to follow her across all formats. Likely, Isis is one of many such followers, and readers just haven’t been given the opportunity to learn the rest. Like Alfred the Cat, Isis doesn’t have any special powers or abilities unless one is willing to count cuteness.

While Dr. Shapiro is incredibly bright, he depends on his collar for communication. When his collar is removed, his ability to speak is limited.

He holds a doctorate in superhuman biology, which explains his role at Stark Unlimited. Dr. Shapiro also has his own powered armor and suit, though calling it “cute” might earn a call to HR. He played an essential role in handling the Nano Iron Man Armor and was instrumental in helping thwart Ultron Pym.

It’s safe to say Streaky has earned the title of Supercat. Over the years, she’s gone through some changes and retcons. For instance, Streaky was originally male but is currently depicted as female. Regardless of these shifts, Streaky is always portrayed as Power Girl’s best friend.

She’s a proud member of both the Legion of Super-Pets and the Superman Family. As a superpowered cat, Streaky is highly intelligent, with the ability to read and write. She possesses many classic Superman abilities, including flight, heat vision, and super speed and strength. Streaky recently attempted to retire, but was quickly pulled back into action when Krypto and Titus needed backup dealing with an alien pet thief.
