Marvel Rivals is one of the House of Ideas’ biggest success stories in years with fans new and old falling in love with classic characters from all corners of Marvel Comics lore. One of players’ favorite aspects is the game’s fantastic cosmetics system featuring a lineup of dozens of alternate skins for their favorite Marvel heroes from across all mediums.

But while Marvel Rivals is off to a great start, there’s always room for improvement. And there are more than a few fan-favorite designs throughout Marvel Comics history that make for must-have costumes for Marvel Rivals free-to-download juggernaut.

Hulk: Ultimates

First Appearance: Ultimate Invasion #2 by Jonathan Hickman & Bryan Hitch

Marvel’s new Ultimate Universe is all about reinventing classic characters in unexpected ways, and few of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are as radically different as the new Hulk of Earth-6160. Based in K’un-Lun of Iron Fist fame, this version of Bruce Banner is in total control of his Hulk persona, having achieved “enlightenment” as the de facto spiritual leader of this reality while secretly serving the dark designs of the Maker’s Council.

Along with this sinister new purpose comes a new design that’s sure ultimately be considered one of Hulk’s most interesting designs with the Grey Goliath donning the humble robes of a monk in contrast to his massive frame and power. This design is unlike any skin Rivals fans have seen thus far and definitely would be a smashing success.

Cloak & Dagger: Negative Influence

First Appearance: Spider-Island: Cloak & Dagger by Nick Spencer & Emma Ríos

Cloak and Dagger have quickly become breakout hits as one of the go-to Strategist characters in just about any team lineup, and a new skin would likely keep up the momentum. Some of Ty and Tandy’s most interesting designs came at the literal hands of Mister Negative – the Spider-Man villain capable of accessing the Darkforce and Lightforce sources of Cloak and Dagger’s abilities.

The House of Ideas has introduced thousands of characters throughout its vast publication history, but some Marvel icons are more memorable than other

This encounter with Mister Negative essentially reversed Ty and Tandy’s abilities, granting Cloak light-based powers while enslaving Tandy to the darkness. The two heroes would eventually return to normal, but not before menacing their Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man while under Negative’s influence. Such interesting redesigns would not only be a boon for Cloak and Dagger’s Rivals wardrobe, but it could potentially lead to fun switches with their play styles to boot.

Magneto: Trial of Magneto

First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men #200 by Chris Claremont & John Romita, Jr.

Magneto has more than a few iconic looks from which to pull, but there are few redesigns that are as much a departure from Erik’s iconic look as the new suit he wore during the infamous Trial of Magneto. Helmet-less and fully purple with a giant “M” emblazoned on his chest, this design marked a notable milestone in Magnus’ journey from the X-Men’s greatest foe to their longtime ally.

Having since been adapted in X-Men ’97 (2024), this is a look that’s still fresh in the minds of the general public. Based on their King Magnus skin, the developers at Marvel Rivals clearly already know how to animate the Master of Magnetism’s flowing locks and this form-fitting display would cut quite a figure against the other players on the battlefield.

7

Wolverine: Tan & Brown

First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men #139 by Chris Claremont & John Byrne

Wolverine is far and away one of Marvel Comics’ biggest characters, and as such, the ol’ Caknucklehead has no shortage of incredible designs from throughout his years of publication history that could serve as inspiration for Marvel Rivals’ next adaptation. And if he’s not wearing a variant of his classic yellow number, Logan’s usually equipped with some version of his equally classic brown-and-tan wardrobe that debuted right after The Dark Phoenix Saga.

As is, Wolverine doesn’t currently have any comic-related skins in Rivals with his look from Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) standing in for the de facto yellow tiger stripe design fans know and love. The inclusion of what is arguably Wolverine’s second-most famous design is a no-brainer, and there’s no way that X-Men fans young and old wouldn’t leap at the chance to unlock it.

6

Warlock: Magus

First Appearance: Strange Tales #178 by Jim Starlin

The universal opposite of one Adam Warlock, the Magus is a corrupted version of the Avatar of Life hailing from an alternate timeline in which Order and Chaos sought to create the perfect being to oppose Thanos. Having battled, corrupted, and overtaken Earth-616’s Adam Warlock more than a few times, this corrupt copy is one of Adam’s longest lasting foes as well as a perfect opportunity for Rivals to add a sinister twist to the otherwise benevolent Strategist.

His grim purple skin and white hair contrasting with Warlock’s usual golden physiology, an adaptation of Magus would be quite the departure from what many of the game’s players may be used to. And the opportunity for some equally sinister new voice lines for Adam Warlock would be too tempting to resist.

5

Star-Lord: Annihilation Conquest

First Appearance: Annihilation: Conquest – Star-Lord #1 by Keith Giffen & Timothy Green II

Before there was the Guardians of the Galaxy, there was the Star-Lord and the ragtag group of interstellar misfits he led against Ultron and the Phalanx in the aftermath of the Annihilation Wave. With a new mission came a new wardrobe, including the first iteration of Star-Lord’s signature space helmet.

Clearly inspired by the military uniforms of the early 20th Century, Peter Quill’s redesign for Annihilation: Conquest serves as a reminder of his past as a soldier and tactical genius all while standing apart from the skins currently available to Marvel Rivals players that primarily opt to play as the Guardians of the Galaxy’s human head honcho. This look set the trend for what would become of Star-Lord for the rest of the 21st Century and leaving it out of Rivals would surely be a galaxy-sized blunder.

4

Spider-Man: Future Foundation

First Appearance: FF #1 by Jonathan Hickman & Steve Epting

Following the death of the Human Torch, the Fantastic Four underwent a metamorphosis of sorts. Rebranding themselves as the Future Foundation, they sought to push the envelope further than ever, all while honoring the Human Torch’s last wishes and offering Spider-Man himself Johnny’s old spot on the team. Along with the new team and family, Spidey got a brand-new Future Foundation redesign, and this black and white number is practically begging to be added to Marvel Rivals.

So far, Season 1 of Rivals has been heavily emphasizing the presence of the Fantastic Four, so it’s only natural for the unofficial fifth member of the team to get in on the action. And with the release of Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) later this year, odds are that Marvel Rivals will continue to push Marvel’s First Family – and hopefully the Future Foundation’s Spider-Man along with them.

3

Storm: Regent of Arakko

First Appearance: X-Men Red #1 by Al Ewing & Stefano Caselli

Designed by Russell Dauterman, Storm’s redesign for the pages of X-Men Red quickly became one of the Windrider’s most beloved redesigns of all time and will likely be an inspiration for Storm adaptations become. Harkening back to her punk-inspired outfit of the ‘80s – a design that’s already been adapted into a skin by the Marvel Rivals team – Ororo’s more contemporary look incorporates bits and pieces from Storm designs across multiple eras.

Marvel’s mutants can reach extreme levels of power, but we’re counting down the most powerful X-Men of all time. The results might surprise you.

The reinterpretation of Storm’s iconic mohawk finally featuring textured hair was particularly lauded by fans new and old and would certainly go over well with Marvel Rivals players getting their first glimpse at Ororo’s wardrobe as the Regent of Arakko without ever having read the comics. Either way, adapting this fan-favorite Storm design would almost certainly blow fans away.

2

Captain America: Classic

First Appearance: Captain America Comics #1 by Joe Simon & Jack Kirby

Cap is one of Marvel Rivals most popular Vanguard characters, but so far, the Sentinel of Liberty’s wardrobe choices aren’t living up to their potential. After all, of all the redesigns undergone by Earth’s Mightiest Heroes making up Rivals’ roster, Captain America’s base design is arguably the most drastic change from his comic book counterpart.

After all, in the lore of Rivals, this multiversal variant of Steve Rogers wasn’t unthawed until the year 2099, meaning that his revamped Captain America uniform his so high-tech that it almost looks more like an Iron Man design than a Cap costume. Captain America’s traditional costume has stayed largely the same for the better part of a century and it definitely deserves a place in Marvel Rivals – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

1

Jeff: Venomized

First Appearance: Extreme Venomverse #5 by Kelly Thompson & Gurihiru

Jeff the Landshark is arguably the breakout star of Marvel Rivals and there’s no shortage of possibilities when it comes to potential alternate skins for everyone’s favorite sea-based Strategist, but the one Jeff look that’s noticeably missing is his beloved Symbiote redesign from the pages of Extreme Venomverse #5. Though this anthology issue isn’t the first time Jeff is infected by a Symbiote, it is the debut of his fan-favorite Symbiote design, and it’s about as adorable as fans would expect.

After all, Marvel loves bonding non-Spider-Man characters to a Symbiote for the sake of an alien redesign, and Jeff the Landshark is no different. But in this case, nobody will be complaining when they see that a Venomized version of Marvel Comics’ Jeff the Landshark is cute enough to eat – or cute enough to eat them.
