First seen in the pages of 2004’s Secret War #1 by Brian Michael Bendis and Gabriele Dell’Otto, Lucia von Bardas is a Latverian native who followed in Doctor Doom’s footsteps by making her way to the United States in search of an education and career before returning home to put what she had learned to use. When Doom was deposed from his place as the reigning monarch of Latveria, it was Lucia von Bardas who the United States looked to as a useful replacement. While Lucia did indeed succeed in becoming Latveria’s next Prime Minister, she wasn’t nearly as much of an ally as the U.S. government had hoped she would be.

Rather than amicably working towards agreements that would benefit both countries, Lucia von Bardas only did so publicly, all while bankrolling U.S. based criminals such as the Tinkerer. When the truth of the matter came out and the government chose to look the other way, Nick Fury led a hand-picked team of heroes to infiltrate Lucia’s stronghold and bring her reign of terror to an end permanently. Unfortunately, this drove a deep wedge between Nick Fury and his allies, whereas Lucia survived her castle crumbling down on top of her by being transformed into the cybernetically augmented villain fans know today.
