Rogue and Gambit are one of the most beloved X-Men couples in Marvel, with a lengthy history to back their relationship up, and though the two heroes have had their share of drama, one Marvel comic writer perfectly explains how Remy and Rogue are so compelling together, as author Kelly Thomson reveals their greatest hurdle was also the key to Rogue and Gambit’s success.

In Marvel’s ‘Women of Marvel’ podcast, Rogue and Gambit series writers Kelly Thomson, Preeti Chhibber, Cass Morrison, and Ellie Pyle came together discuss the inner workings of Rogue, and in their discussion, they reveal how they write for one of the most iconic X-Men couples.

As they noted, the long-term success of the couple has been a positive result of the core conflicts that have threatened to break them up at times over the years. Check out the full quotes below to learn more.

Marvel Writer Kelly Thompson Reveals Exactly Why Iconic X-Men Couple Rogue & Gambit Works So Well

The Couple’s Relationship Seemed Impossible, Which Made It Perfect

Kelly Thomson notes Rogue’s initial coldness and how that played a part in the blossoming of Rogue and Gambit’s relationship, stating:

And I think I really connected with her not being able to be touched. It was core. You can make it about a lot of different things. And for me, it hit that that was a protective way for her to live. If you can’t be touched, you can’t be hurt and so shields up. And I think a lot of kids would find that relatable in a lot of different ways. It applied for me, romantically, but I think it also applied just kind of across the board. And so she was an incredible character to connect with.

And it was also really, that sounds like a really dark, depressing sad way to connect with her, but I could also see– and that was why the Gambit and Rogue relationship in part became so core to me and my fandom was that he loved her anyway. And you felt in his sometimes annoyingly dogged pursuit that doesn’t look as great in a 2023 lens, I think we would all agree. But there was something very reassuring about this idea that he wasn’t going anywhere.

Rogue and Gambit are both uniquely complex yet endearing characters, and their combined baggage, allure, and well-written love for one another developed, over time, into the greatest romance in Marvel lore. As Thompson cited, the complexity and complications of their dynamic was one of great drama, but ultimately, that drama proved to be fertile ground out of which an unbreakable bond was able to grow.

Rogue’s powers play a large part in how she navigates the world and why she initially keeps her distance from others and avoids intimacy. Since the conception of Rogue and Gambit’s romance, the two X-Men have persisted through trials and tribulations of how to make their love work, with Rogue’s powers being one of the main hurdles in their relationship.Thomson, Chhibbir, and Pyleagree that Rogue’s inability to touch made their romance one of the most compelling, as it pushed the two X-Men’s love to be expressed beyond physical connection despite their palpable attraction to each other.

Gambit and Rogue may be one of Marvel’s greatest romances, but there was a time when these two X-Men were almost split up – permanently.

Rogue and Gambit’s relationship has grown immensely since the first hint of their romance in 1991’s X-Men #4, with Gambit’s one-sided, and initially unwelcomed flirtation towards Rogue. Thomson notes she originally thought Gambit only liked the challenge, and though this is partially true,Thomson also notes Gambit sees Rogue for who she really is and stands beside her despite her guarded personality, which truly makes their romance far more profound. Their relationship took time, which eventually saw Rogue grow her powers so the couple could finally touch and have a gratifying conclusion to their first relationship arc.

Move Over Cyclops and Jean Grey

When Rogue and Gambit finally kissed for the first time, she uncovered his dark history with Mister Sinister, and it almost put an end to the couple’s relationship but gradually they were able to reconcile. In the podcast, Ellie Pyle calls attention to their enduring relationship, stating:

So on the topic of romance, I’m going to go into my Ted Talk a little bit here about what I like to call ‘Rogue’s Law,’ which is that a ship is only as compelling as the reasons these two characters cannot be together. And I think that this is why Rogue and Gambit are the most enduring of ships, is that it is just a perfect alchemy of characters who have incredible chemistry, who you can’t even pretend that these two people don’t want to be together.

Both Gambit and Rogue are strong-willed characters who know what they want and can always spin a bad situation, whether it’s their relationship issues or missions with the X-Men. When Kitty Pryde and Colossus’ wedding went south in X-Men: Gold #30, Gambit jumps at the opportunity to marry Rogue, and in their vows, Rogue says they’ve been through more than the average couple, but they “always keep finding ways back to each other.” Their impromptu wedding is a moment that encompasses how Rogue and Gambit have quite possibly had the most growth out of all the X-Men franchise’s couples.
