The following contains major spoilers for Wolverine #4, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
One of Marvel’s most dangerous monsters is on his way towards becoming a hero, and it’s all thanks to Wolverine.
Wolverine #4 opens to a brutal confrontation between the titular mutant antihero and one of the deadliest beasts the Canadian wilderness has to offer — the Wendigo. Rather than any actual fight to the bloody finish, however, this particular battle is more of a lesson in patience than it is an exercise in violence. As it turns out, all Logan is looking for is a sign that the man behind the monster is still there, as there is seemingly nothing Wolverine won’t do to help Marvel’s latest Wendigo reclaim his humanity.

The Wendigo has a long and storied history in the pages of Marvel Comics, one that just so happens to intersect with Wolverine’s own comic book debut. The first Wendigo seen in Marvel Comics, Paul Cartier, made his debut in 1973’s Incredible Hulk #162 by Steve Englehart and Herb Trimpe. After a hunting trip gone horribly wrong left Paul trapped alongside a man who ultimately lost his own life to a pack of hungry wolves, Cartier was forced to consume what remained of his fellow hunter to survive. This grotesque act of cannibalism cursed Paul to live the rest of his days as a Wendigo.
At least, that was the case up until his close friend George Baptiste took Cartier’s curse upon himself instead. Thanks to some unexpected help from Bruce Banner, Baptiste was able to complete the necessary ritual to transfer the curse. In the process of hunting Cartier down, Banner was forced to confront the beast in the form of his own monstrous alter-ego, leading to a battle that eventually served as a perfect point of introduction for Wolverine, who stepped into the middle of the fight for himself following a brief cameo appearance in the pages of 1974’s Incredible Hulk #180 by Len Wein and Herb Trimpe.

Four fan-favorite Marvel characters are all prime suspects as the potential host of the All-New Venom, though they aren’t all the same breed of hero.
The latest Wendigo, a man known only as Leonard, made his first appearance only a few months ago in the pages of Wolverine #2. Like nearly every other Wendigo before him, Leonard resorted to eating the flesh of his fellow man while trapped in the unforgiving Canadian wilderness. Instead of being another unlucky hunter, however, Leonard was an ambitious teen who escaped a secluded group home along with some of his friends. Unfortunately, they were all ill-prepared for the winter to come, leading a boy named Ryan to die of starvation before becoming Leonard’s last meal as a human being. When Wolverine initially encountered Leonard, he assumed the ensuing battle would be a fight to the death, only to be caught off-guard by the fact that this Wendigo could speak, let alone ask for help directly.

Wolverine
Wolverine first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #180, where he battled the Jade Giant to a standstill, before joining Marvel’s X-Men in 1975. Since then, the short-tempered berserker with unbreakable claws has proven himself as one of Marvel’s most popular characters. The mutant hero was also the backbone of the X-Men film franchise, which ran from 2000 to 2020, and critics consider his solo film, Logan, one of the best superhero movies ever made.
Known as an unstoppable tank who can cut through anything, Wolverine isn’t technically one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes but he’s one of the deadliest characters on their roster. Even villains like Magneto and the Juggernaut have learned to be wary of Wolverine’s claws.
