The following contains major spoilers for Infinity Watch #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
The rules of the Marvel Universe’s most powerful artifacts are being rewritten for the worse.
Infinity Watch #1 sees the eponymous team of Stone-Bearers leap into action for their very first official mission together. Unfortunately, the team are no match for the threat of the alien Apeiron who have come to steal away their powers, although the unlikely aid of the sword-wielding Avery Zavala certainly is. As Avery explains, he commands an Infinity Stone of his own just like the heroes of Infinity Watch, and while anyone else wielding an Infinity Stone in a foreign reality would be cut off from their powers, those chosen as Stone-Bearers are entirely immune from that particular limitation.

The first of Marvel’s Infinity Stones, the Soul Stone, made its comic book debut in the pages of 1971’s Marvel Premiere #1 by Roy Thomas, Gil Kane, and Dan Adkins, although it was almost completely ignored by the characters at the heart of the story. It wasn’t until nearly a year later that the Soul Stone was referenced by name, and even later when its true power was glimpsed for the first time. With command over ethereal energies and a mind of its own, the Soul Stone is easily the most complex and dangerous of all the Infinity Stones.
The team known as the Infinity Watch were originally formed by Adam Warlock in the hopes of safeguarding the Infinity Stones from the likes of those who would use them for nefarious purposes. Surprisingly, Thanos himself was given the Reality Gem at the time, all while a lineup of genuine heroes were chosen to wield the rest. This included Adam Warlock himself, who kept watch over the Soul Stone, as well as Moondragon, Gamora, Pip the Troll, and Drax the Destroyer.

Two of Marvel’s Most Important Super Teams Are Finally Reuniting
Two of the greatest teams of heroes in the entire Marvel Universe are finally reuniting after years of being at odds over the fate of the planet.
The current Infinity Watch is made up of seven Stone-Bearers, individuals chosen to serve as living hosts to the Infinity Stones, which have all been imbued with minds and spirits of their own. This lineup consists of Phil Coulson as the Bearer of the Death Stone, Colleen Wing as the Bearer of the Mind Stone, Apex as the Bearer of the Power Stone, Overtime as the Bearer of the Time Stone, Quantum as the Bearer of the Space Stone, Star as the Bearer of the Reality Stone, and Multitude as the Bearer of the Soul Stone. Though not all of these characters are overt heroes, together they have chosen to do the best they can with the impossible powers they now wield.
