Chris Evans is back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the star’s Avengers: Doomsday return sounds to me like the latest sign that past reports about major changes coming to the franchise are accurate. Evans’ Captain America is my favorite MCU hero, and before he gave life to Steve Rogers, I had already enjoyed his portrayal of Johnny Storm in two Fantastic Four movies. After Avengers: Endgame, I maintained hope that future MCU movies would feature the star’s return. Thankfully, that happened earlier than I expected, with Evans playing the Human Torch again in this year’s Deadpool & Wolverine.
Recently, it was revealed that Chris Evans will star in Avengers: Doomsday, marking his return to Marvel’s biggest franchise. The news surprised me, as I only expected the Multiverse Saga to bring Evans back for Avengers: Secret Wars, not the next Avengers movie. Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast also features Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, and I’m starting to think that their returns to the franchise, as well as some other recent developments at Marvel Studios, could lead to a major Avengers movie theory proving itself accurate in a few years.

Other Popular Stars Have Returned To Marvel Through The MCU
Evans did a great job as the Human Torch in Deadpool & Wolverine. The actor’s role is one of the movie’s most talked about aspects, with the third Deadpool film’s R-rated nature allowing Evans to really let loose in a way he had never before as either Johnny Storm or Captain America. For now, Chris Evans’ role in Avengers: Doomsday remains a mystery. Previously, Evans commented on returning as Captain America, indicating the character was special to him and that he feared ruining the perfect ending Steve Rogers got. Still, even if it’s not Cap, Evans is in Avengers: Doomsday.
The MCU Already Has The Perfect Excuse To Make Chris Evans’s Avengers: Doomsday Return Very Different From Robert Downey Jr.’s In One Key Way
Chris Evans will star in Avengers: Doomsday alongside Robert Downey Jr., but the MCU stars could have completely different roles in the major story.
A pattern has formed at Marvel over the Multiverse Saga, and I see Evans’ Avengers return as its latest addition. With the help of the multiverse as a plot device, the MCU has brought back both actors who had left the franchise, like Evans and Robert Downey Jr., and multiple stars from Fox’s X-Men movies. Some of the names to come from the mutant franchise include Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, and Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool. Based on how the next Avengers is shaping up, I believe even more Marvel actors will return in them.

The Mutant Team Has An MCU Movie In Development
The pattern of Marvel actors returning to star in MCU projects has interestingly featured quite a few X-Men stars. Actors from Fox’s original X-Men franchise and the Deadpool movies have come back in their roles, while Evan Peters, who played Quicksilver in the young X-Men timeline, joined the MCU as a fake Quicksilver, later revealed to be Ralph Bohner. I have enjoyed all of the returning X-Men stars, and I still want to see many more appear, like Michael Fassbender’s Magneto and James McAvoy’s Charles Xavier. Thankfully, a recent update makes it seem like that could happen.

Recently, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige commented on the MCU’s X-Men. Feige talked about how Avengers: Secret Wars will lead to the X-Men reboot in the MCU. While that is exciting, I found something else he said to be even more. According to Feige, X-Men players that fans might recognize will show up in the MCU’s “next few movies.”The Marvels‘ post-credits scene showed what appears to be a variant of Kelsey Grammer’s Beast in a new X-Men universe. I believe that Marvel will have that universe as part of an incursion with the MCU, so Fox’s X-Men will return.
A New Era For Marvel Could Be On The Way
In October 2023, an Avengers: Secret Wars report claimed the MCU would be rebooted after the movie. The information came from MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios author Joanna Robinson, who said the book featured a quote from Kevin Feige implying that “Secret Wars will serve as a soft reboot“ for the franchise. I always thought that made sense, as the comic book event that serves as the source material for the movie also did the same, changing things all over the Marvel universe, like bringing Miles Morales to the main universe.
All 10 Marvel Movie Teams That Could Appear In Avengers 6
After years without Avengers movies, the MCU will debut two major entries for its biggest franchise, and Secret Wars is set up to feature major teams.
Following Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr.’s MCU returns, as well as X-Men franchise actors coming back and Feige teasing that even more will appear in the MCU’s next movies, it seems like a reboot is really coming. All of these developments make it seem like Marvel Studios is using the Multiverse Saga as a way to send off the beloved actors who played heroes and villains over the past two decades. Avengers: Secret Wars could then reboot the MCU and set up new actors as major characters. Those plans could be made clearer by Avengers: Doomsday.
