Marvel Launches Its Most “Volatile” Romance Thanks to the Avengers

Marvel’s next iteration of the Avengersis already promising a potentially explosive romance is officially on the horizon, as a fan-favorite mutant powerhouse just started a new fling with Earth-616’s latest bad boy. With the reformation of the West Coast Avengers, the team’s lineup includes several heavy-hitters – along with the shocking addition of a few villains, in an effort to rehabilitate them, creating opportunities for some unique character dynamics.

Ben Harvey’s cover for West Coast Avengers #4 – written by Gerry Duggan with art by Danny Kim – shows Firestar flying high and locking lips with the new reformed villain on the team, Blue Bolt. Though the new superhero romance is intriguing, there are some pretty major red flags out of the gate for the two West Coast Avengers and their workplace relationship. A brand-new character, Blue Bolt will be introduced in West Coast Avengers, and has already been dubbed “ the biggest jerk in the Marvel Universe ”. As one of the worst people to join an Avengers team ever, with a diabolical villainous past still to be revealed in the series, striking up a love connection with Blue Bolt seems like a pretty bad idea for Firestar, which will likely not end well.

Firestar has had her share of superhero romances in the past, with a bit of a love triangle in her debut as a character with Spider-Man and Iceman in the animated Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends series, as well as a notable relationship with the hero Justice after joining the comics. After the Krakoa era, Firestar AKA Angelica Jones is on a rough path, and she has recently been seen struggling in initial previews for West Coast Avengers #1. With the mutant at her lowest and now paired with a renowned jerk, Firestar’s next Avengers-level relationship could end in disaster.

Though Blue Bolt is being teased as a terrible new villain to join the heroic superteam, one of the Avengers’ greatest threats has also been upgraded to team member status. Joining Marvel’s new couple, Iron Man, War Machine, and Spider-Woman in Duggan and Kim’s West Coast Avengers is the classic supervillain Ultron. The mix of big personalities in the group’s newest iteration could make for the most fraught and turbulent team-up the Marvel Universe has seen yet.

Though Marvel has featured many unlikely pairings before in terms of team rosters and relationships, the newest love affair being teased is still a surprise, because promotional material for the series is setting up Blue Bolt as a true bad guy.
