“What if Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds, chose Moon Knight as his newest herald?” is a question Marvel will soon answer. While the Fist of Vengeance and Galactus have never met, it may surprise readers that Moon Knight has already proven powerful enough to handle the Power Cosmic and not want them. Marc Spector is already a man touched by a god, another cosmic deity’s powers shouldn’t pose a problem.

As revealed by Marvel, What If…? Galactus Transformed Moon Knight? #1 – by Alex Segura, Scot Eaton, & Cam Smith – is one of a series of new comics coming out next year featuring some unsuspecting Marvel characters being turned into heralds of Galactus.

As many fans will know, the Fist of Khonshu has already wielded cosmic powers far older than Galactus, and chose to give them away. Like a true herald of Galactus, Marc Spector knows how to both wield and hold back power.

Marc Spector, on a near-cosmic level, is known as one of Earth’s most spiritual beings, fully due to his constant teetering between life and death and the sincerity of his devotion to Khonshu. The Power Cosmic, much like any other energy in the Marvel Universe, can be treated as both scientific and magical in nature. One source of cosmic power specifically, the Phoenix Force, is a living embodiment of cosmic power, older than Galactus himself, and once chose Marc Spector as its avatar.

During the
Infinity Crusades
event, the Goddess, a logical cosmic being and part of Adam Warlock, chose Moon Knight to serve in her army against her evil other half, noting his unyielding spiritual devotion as a true selfless acolyte.

Throughout the Age of Khonshu series, Marc was able to wield a Spirit of Vengeance and hold Thor’s hammer, but his greatest achievement was when he was chosen to become the next Phoenix. Khonshu had become undependable and paranoid, so, while locked in battle with the Black Panther, Moon Knight prayed to the Phoenix Force, offering his pain as tribute. Like Galactus’s call, the Phoenix Force breeds temptation to become something worse, but even in the face of near-infinite cosmic power, Marc Spector chose to let it go. Marc knows better than most how far unchecked gods can fall.

The Phoenix Force wouldn’t be the last cosmic-level power Moon Knight was made to wield. In Agatha Harkness’s attempt to recreate a Darkhold, she pitted Moon Knight and Taegukgi against each other in an arena that warped them into godly variants of themselves. Marc was transformed into a divine version of himself that had usurped Khonshu and taken his place as the “Patricidal God of the Moon.” In this form, Moon Knight had become a literal god in his own right, a cosmic being powerful enough to kill and assume the mantle of an Elder God.

An exciting tease by Marvel unveils a new event for Summer 2023, the bombastic Contest of Chaos, which will see beloved heroes battling one another.

Like before, Marc willingly gave away his powers. Marc Spector has wielded the power of gods and cosmic entities many times and has done so with a level of grace and humility that might not be expected from the same man who claims to wear white so that his enemies can see their blood on him. It is Galactus that truly holds the Power Cosmic, but it is his heralds that choose restraint and mercy on his behalf. While a seemingly unlikely choice, Moon Knight proves himself a worthy successor to the Silver Surfer’s title of herald of Galactus.
