Inside my Lord of the Comics style quest to take the DC Versus Marvel Omnibuses to NYCC 2024 to get signed

I never thought Marvel and DC would get on the same page to reprint their classic crossovers of yore. But when they jointly announced plans to collect many of them – so many of them in fact, it took of those extra-size omnibuses – I was ecstatic. They were scheduled to come out in August, and I had the quixotic and dreamlike plan to take them to New York Comic Con 2024 and get them signed by as many of the creators as possible.

In early May, delays were announced – and I was publicly grateful and optimistic about it (as long-time readers of mine know is unusual when it comes to comic delays), as they were pushed back simply seven weeks to a late September 2024 release. New York Comic Con wasn’t until mid-October, so I’m safe.

But then, this week I got the news through sources at Marvel that the two companies were having to delay the books again. Let me rip the bandaid off here, and just say it outright.

The DC Versus Marvel: The Amalgam Age Omnibus is now scheduled to come out on December 31, 2024.

The DC Versus Marvel Omnibus is scheduled for October 29.

Tragic! Both after NYCC 2024 – and one simply eight days after New York Comic Con. My dreams were dashed, my hopes held hostage by an idea of my own making in my list-making mind that had now been inked with a poison pen. A poison pen twice-dipped in ink, as I read that at least one copy of The DC Versus Marvel: The Amalgam Age Omnibus had made its way to fellow fan Tom Brevoort as noted in his Substack.

Of course, “fellow fan Tom Brevoort” is also “Marvel Comics’ executive editor Tom Brevoort” – so I forgive him of the benefits of the job (just as I get to be the first reader on many of the stories and videos you see on this very website).

I could get granular and tell you how long these days are – ok, I will…. A 21-week delay for DC Versus Marvel: The Amalgam Age Omnibus, and a 12 week delay for the DC Versus Marvel Omnibus… but that aside, I still wait, propped up by the simple fact that it’s happening at all. Just not today, or at New York Comic Con, but hopefully this year.

Next year, if you see someone in an airport carrying two huge comic books, it is me – taking it to (or possibly from) the numerous conventions it’ll take to get these damned books signed.

Until then, I’ll be tilting at – oh wait, that’s Brian Hibbs’ line.

Marvel vs. DC: The key differences and distinctions between the two superhero and comics titans.
