The following contains major spoilers for Ultimate X-Men #7, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The new Ultimate Marvel Universe is about to meet a new supervillain team.

While Noriko Ashida, better known as Surge, is busy with an otherwise ordinary checkup at the hospital, an ominous group of figures not far away are toiling away in secret towards what will surely be devastating ends. As seen in the pages of Ultimate X-Men #7, someone in the hospital is working with the Children of the Atom, and the Maester’s plans may very well involve the Shadow King’s comatose young host soon enough.

The Children of the Atom moniker has been applied to numerous groups. Originally, Children of the Atom was a catch-all term to refer to the mutants of the Marvel Universe as a whole. In 1999, writer Joe Casey and artist Steve Rude’s X-Men: Children of the Atom put the moniker to print in a retelling of Professor Charles Xavier’s search for the original five members of the eponymous team of mutant heroes.

In writer Vita Ayala and artist Bernard Chang’s story “Race” from the pages of 2020’s Marvel Voices #1the new Children of the Atom were introduced as a team of technologically enhanced humans who sought to follow in the X-Men’s footsteps. They used the alien tech that Cherub, Cyclops-Lass, Gimmick, Marvel Guy, and Daycrawler fought against the Hells Belles and proved themselves capable.
