A storm is brewing in the Marvel Universe as The Avengers and the X-Men once again face off against each other, with the beloved hero Storm caught right in the middle. The cover art for The Avengers #21 by artist Valerio Schiti is putting the spotlight on the coming battle between Captain Marvel and Cyclops, as a new Avengers Vs. X-Men war looms heavily over the two superpowered teams.

Most recently, World War Orchis saw the Avengers allying themselves with the oppressed X-Men as they fought against the fascistic rule of Orchis, who were attempting to destroy Krakoa and eradicate mutantkind. The Avengers #21 – by writer Jed MacKay, who is also writing X-Men, and artist Valerio Schiti – will see the X-Men leader Cyclops battle with Avengers leader Captain Marvel, as the Scarlet Witch finally faces down her father Magneto, and new Avenger member Storm is forced to choose a side…

AVENGERS VS. X-MEN! Jed MacKay pits his Avengers against his X-Men in a story that sows the seeds for some major future developments! Captain Marvel and Cyclops square off! Scarlet Witch and Magneto finally confront their history! And Storm’s loyalties are put to the test…

But, will this fight lead to another war between the former allies?

The Avengers and the X-Men have historically not been enemies per se, but have experienced a lot of tension and differences in their perspectives on heroism. While the Avengers are often seen as “super cops,” responding to crises, the X-Men have usually attempted proactive heroism, which has led to major run-ins in the past. Ironically, one of the most significant times the Avengers have acted proactively, trying to stop the Phoenix Force from inhabiting Hope Summers as a host, led to the infamous Avengers vs. X-Men war. Since then, the two teams have repaired their relationship and become strong allies, making this latest descent into fighting saddening.

Invincible Iron Man Annual #1 puts the Avenger in a tense situation with the X-Men’s Storm, giving her the chance to call out the teams’ differences.

Since the fall of Krakoa, Cyclops has been operating with his new X-Men team out of their base in Merle, Alaska. While they have been doing many heroic deeds, it is quickly becoming clear that Cyclops is forming a revolutionary Brotherhood, like he did after the Phoenix Five incident. Captain Marvel and Cyclops have fought recently, with Scott using his impressive tactical skills to defeat Carol in the Contest of Chaos. This fight between the two team leaders will lead to major developments between the various heroes… while the Scarlet Witch will finally confront Magneto about their traumatic history after they both recently went through dramatic resurrections.

New Avengers Member Storm Will Face A Difficult Decision

Ororo may need to choose between her former teammates and her new team

After the fall of Krakoa, and the Genesis War won on Arakko, the beloved Omega-level mutant Storm was searching for a new place to call home. Thankfully, Avengers member Captain America came to the rescue and offered Storm a role on the team, just as a major catastrophe was headed for Earth. Now on a new team – with her ex-husband T’Challa no less – The Avengers #21 will force Ororo Munroe to choose between her mutant family and her Avengers teammates, in a decision that could shape Storm’s role in the Marvel Universe for years to come.

Hopefully, the cover for The Avengers #21 is just teasing a minor disagreement between the brash Captain Marvel and passionate Cyclops, a battle that won’t spiral into an all-out war. Better yet, Storm may use her unique connection to both teams to forge a new alliance between the heroes, preventing another Avengers vs. X-Men event.

The Avengers #21 from Marvel Comics debuts on December 4th, 2024.
