Mary Jane Watson is officially Marvel’s All-New Venom, and honestly, I’m down for it. While MJ may have begun as little more than Peter Parker’s on-again-off-again love interest, the character has long since deviated towards her own heroic career. Now, Venom is getting a double dose of something he desperately needs: love and power. Things have been rough since the Venom War, and Mary Jane is the perfect host to help set things right.

In a shockingly early reveal, Marvel Comics has officially exposed the true identity of the All-New Venom: Mary Jane Watson.

Following the devastating violence of the Venom War, the Venom symbiote was left dying and without a host to heal it. Since then, Venom has made a golden debut. The mysterious identity of the host is something Marvel has toyed with since the All-New Venom series, by Al Ewing and Carlos Gómez, began in December 2024. However, since Mary Jane’s debut as Venom’s host, the internet has been ablaze, bashing Marvel for this decision. Frankly, that opinion isn’t fair.

Venom and Mary Jane Are Both Parents Without Children

Both Heroes Can Find Solace In Each Other

Despite Venom’s lengthy and brutal history of pure violence and lethal justice, the symbiote has actually become quite the sensitive little alien. After
Peter Parker abandoned the symbiote
, it reeled in putrid anger for decades alongside Eddie Brock. In the Venom War: Spider-Man miniseries, Venom openly communicated the pain and loss that losing a host causes a symbiote. It expounds that Eddie and Dylan Brock are his family, a status that symbiotes aren’t traditionally known for acknowledging. After bonding with Peter, then Eddie, and now Dylan, Venom realized that it isn’t supposed to be alone.

When Venom Breaks Bad: 10 Times Marvel Villains Got Their Own Symbiotes

Venom has merged with many villains throughout the Marvel Universe, giving them shocking redesigns that made them more terrifying than ever before.

So, when
Venom decides to sacrifice itself
to protect Dylan in the heat of Venom War #5 (2024), it once again deprives itself of the one thing it needs more than anything: a host. Which leaves Venom, a father now mourning the loss of his family, with nowhere else to turn… but to the biggest heart that any of its hosts have ever known. Through Peter’s memories, Venom has also shared a large portion of its life with Mary Jane. Through Peter’s emotions, the symbiote knows how deeply trusting and heartfelt Mary Jane Watson is.

Mary Jane Has Her Own Powers To Bring To The Team

Venom Isn’t the Only Superpowered Half of This Hero

Venom needs to heal
, and Mary Jane is about the best host I can think of to take on that responsibility. However, that isn’t the only thing that makes her a decent fit as the All-New Venom. While she may have been involuntarily relinquished to ‘side character’ and ‘love interest’ status, that doesn’t mean MJ is without power to provide to this duo. In Mary Jane & Black Cat #1 by Jed MacKay and Vicenzo Carratù, MJ officially donned her Jackpot Bracelet and her new heroic identity.

She isn’t just some love interest or a motherly figure, and I think it’s ridiculous that people still try to shove her into that box.

Likewise, Mary Jane has already shown that she knows how to use the Venom symbiote better than most of its other hosts. Throughout the All-New Venom series, MJ has successfully scoured through the copied memories of Venom’s last hosts to pull off incredible feats. Mary Jane has also created numerous new and creative techniques with the symbiote that have made AIM’s top forces look like children. She isn’t just some love interest or a motherly figure, and I think it’s ridiculous that people still try to shove her into that box.
Mary Jane is a tried and tested hero

This Venom Duo’s Complicated History Makes For A Touching Bond

Both Heroes Need Each Other

The one specific thing that has me excited about what the series’ writer Al Ewing has in store is the pre-existing, complicated dynamic between Venom and Mary Jane. While the two have rarely interacted face-to-face, MJ has, until now, developed a serious disdain for the alien. She was with Peter when Venom enhanced
Spider-Man’s more toxic tendencies
. She has been a victim of the other side of Venom’s rampages. She has seen the symbiote kill others for decades; of course she doesn’t trust it. But it’s that historic distrust that makes this pairing particularly fun.

After Revealing Venom’s Shocking New Host, Marvel Calls Out “Cynical” Critics

Marvel revealed Mary Jane Watson to be the new host of Venom, and the series’ writer wants fans to be less “cynical” in response to the major change.

Mary Jane Watson isn’t a hateful person. As a parent who relatively recently lost her adopted children, she knows just how much pain Venom is going through at the moment without Eddie or Dylan. In the wake of the Venom War, MJ finally got to see how heroic the symbiote has become since its
Lethal Protector
days. Honestly, the two seem like a perfect match, all things considered. Thematically, their new relationship perfectly combines their similar character dynamics into a single story worth telling, while not forgetting how powerfully fun both characters can be.

Venom has had a rough go of things for a while now, but I fully believe that Mary Jane Watson is exactly the right host that the symbiote needs at the moment, even if it’s not forever.
