Marvel Comics has unveiled a new preview of Laura Kinney: Wolverine, a new X-Men series that will show the deadly assassin X-23 taking on the mantle of Wolverine. The new series, written by Erica Schultz, debuts this December.

ComicBook.com spoke to Schultz ahead of Laura Kinney: Wolverine‘s debut and got a sneak peek of interior art for the series. Schultz teased how the series will explore the different sides of Laura Kinney, some surprising team-ups fans can look forward to, as well as Kinney’s role in the upcoming X-Men crossover event “Raid on Graymalkin.” The character of X-23 has recently starred in Marvel’s limited series Nyx, along with Dafne Keen returning as the character in Deadpool & Wolverine earlier this year. Marvel’s solicit for Laura Kinney: Wolverine reveals that Kinney has left her life behind as the ultimate assassin, and now she takes it upon herself to fight the mutant oppressors of the Marvel Universe.

“There will be new villains and old ones in this series. The fall of Krakoa fractured mutants both geographically and ideologically,” Scultz said, adding: “Laura will learn some new tricks, as well as see that there are still good people out there. I think this book will be true to life in that she’ll have all kinds of experiences that will build on one another and culminate in a new level of her growing up.” Schultz also teased that Laura’s new Wolverine solo series aims to show a new side to the character, saying, “Laura is usually angry, and, despite my being able to relate to that, I wanted to show that she has an optimism, too.”

Schultz Teases X-23’s Role in X-Men’s Civil War & Other Series Team-Ups

Along with the launch of Laura Kinney: Wolverine #1, the X-Men crossover event “Raid on Graymalkin” kicks off in December when the X-Men raid Graymalkin Prison to fight for the dream of Professor Charles Xavier. Schultz spoke about Laura’s role in the upcoming X-Men conflict and how the character prefers to fight alone for now. “Laura is kind of done with teams right now. Even in NYX, her solo issue (#2) shows her mostly on her own,” Schultz said. “She’s by no means against a team up, but she’s also wary of how sometimes teammates complicate things. Complications usually end with someone getting hurt…and not everyone can heal from that.”

Miles Morales is being tested like never before, and one of the greatest Marvel heroes of all time might just be the one to break him.

That’s not to say that Laura won’t be joining forces with any other Marvel heroes during her time as Wolverine. Schultz teased that there will be some “unexpected” team-ups in the series. “Laura is going to learn a lot about herself and how she’s not as alone in this world as she once thought. She’s not the only person in the world who was trained as an assassin at a young age and forced to do things against her will…and maybe she’ll learn that through a team up or two. But you’re going to have to get the book to really find out!”
