Thanks to her iconic look, and her memorable role in the early X-Men films, Rogue is one of Marvel’s most recognizable mutants. Over the years, the character’s powers, her history, and her romantic entanglements have all made Rogue essential to the X-franchise, as she quickly became a fan-favorite character upon her debut, and has remained one ever since.

Rogue was initially introduced as an antagonist. The surrogate daughter of Mystique, Rogue was a key member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. In her earliest appearance, she permanently absorbed the powers of Carol Danvers – at the time known as Ms. Marvel – and as a result, altered the course of both characters’ stories for decades to come. Rogue’s base mutation allows her to drain the memories and life-energy of other individuals into herself; in the case of other mutants or superpowered individuals, she takes their abilities as well.

This has made her one of Marvel’s most powerful characters, but also one of its most dangerous. Originally, Rogue’s draining touch was depicted as incredibly painful – and were she to maintain contact long enough, even lethal. As a result, following the manifestation of her powers, Rogue became isolated, unable to experience human, or mutant, touch. This drove her into the waiting arms of the Brotherhood; following her heroic redemption, it remained the struggle at the core of the character’s emotional journey, as she struggled to accept her power as a gift, rather than a curse.

Endowed with superstrength, speed, agility, and durability, as well as the ability to fly, Rogue has been a perennial powerhouse for the X-Men, a physical force to be reckoned with in combat. Over the years, she has permanently gained the powers of several other notable characters, such as the mutant Sunfire, and the cosmic Marvel hero Wonder Man, solidifying her ranking as one of Marvel’s most powerful individuals.

As with all long-time X-characters, Rogue has faced trials and tribulations, gone through highs and lows – and often, this has been tied to her powers. Originally, the drama of the character was that she lacked conscious control of her powers, leading to the torment of having to refrain from physical contact with any living being. Rogue has gained, lost, and regained control of her abilities throughout her X-Men tenure. Her absorption powers have gone out of control, been negated, and evolved beyond their initial scope, only to be returned to the character’s status quo.

Rogue’s Film Portrayal Made Her A Household Name – But Left A Lot To Be Desired

The MCU Can Elevate Her Further

In 2000, Rogue’s role as the audience’s focal character in the original X-Men movie, and her arc in the subsequent sequels, introduced the hero to mainstream movie viewers. The original X-trilogy presented a grounded portrayal of the character, one that emphasized the emotional toll of her powers, and ultimately ended with her decision to take the cure present in the third film, and become human. While this version of the character did justice to her core concept, it didn’t utilize the character to her greatest potential as a member of the team.

Comic readers are well familiar with Rogue as a battle-tested hero, and fans of X-Men: The Animated Series – and now X-Men ’97 – know her most iconic, empowered form well. That said, the eventual integration of mutantkind into the Marvel Cinematic Universe also presents the opportunity for a fully-realized, live-action version of Rogue at her strongest. The MCU can portray her as a prominent action-oriented character, while still counting on her ability to carry dramatic weight. This would allow her to remain a central part of the franchise’s on-screen adventures, while offering a significant departure from her previous cinematic appearances.

Rogue’s Relationship With Gambit Complicates Her Powers

Of course, the natural recipe for drama, when it comes to a character who is unable to touch others, is romance. Rogue has had several notable romantic entanglements throughout her history, but none is more devotedly ‘shipped by readers than her love affair with Gambit. Rogue and Remy are one of X-Men’s most enduring couples, all the more because they have had to overcome the barrier to physical intimacy presented by her powers. Their relationship has endured a great deal of turbulence, power-related and otherwise, to get to a point where they can have regular physical contact.

Various solutions have been presented in X-stories over the years, but in the long-term, Rogue’s love for Gambit has proved to be her most compelling reason to achieve conscious control of her powers, the ultimate end goal of her growth as a character. Until a brave X-writer throws a wrench into their relationship, for the sake of a good story, the couple are currently able to touch, with each embrace X-Men’s Rogue and Gambit share made all the more special by the fact that it wasn’t always certain their physical connection would be sustainable.
