X-Men’s Most Romantic Mutants Revealed by Marvel

Notable X-Men creators recently discussed why the world of X-Men is perfect for romance and revealed who they think are the most romantic mutants.

On AIPT‘s X-Men Monday Valentine’s Day special, Jordan D. White set the stage by stating why there are many romantic plots in X-Men tales. “In thinking about the X-Men and specifically in a conversation with Annalise Bissa a few years back, we came to a bit of a revelation — that it’s a school’ but where the classes are not at all the important bits,” he said. “The important bits are self-actualization and found family. X-Men is kind of about going to college. And what is college without some serious soap opera drama and romance?” Drew Baumgartner shares White’s sentiment adding, “I don’t think there’s a way to throw a bunch of hormonal teens together and not have some amount of romantic drama bubble to the surface.”

Gerry Duggan, Al Ewing, Kieron Gillen, Christopher Cantwell, Philip Sevy, Steve Foxe, Jaye Jurden, Jason Loo, Jordan Blum, and Anthony Oliveira all weighed in on the conservation. X-Men editor Brevoort summed up the general consensus well, “Over the last few years, it’s been a few hundred mutants all crammed together in close quarters on an island with nothing else to do but Make More Mutants,” he said. “I mean, Krakoa doesn’t even offer cable packages. Prior to that, it was a series about young people boarding together at a school. The ‘fastball special’ is an unofficial Xavier Academy tradition,” the editor added.

The X-Men creators all had their favorite romantic mutants, with Cantwell opting for a less obvious choice, “Xavier. Everything originates from his sexy bald head and his eyebrows constantly reaching outward for a better world. He dashes his heart and the hearts of others repeatedly in service of a dream. What’s more romantic than that?” For Baumgartner it’s Rogue.

The fan-favorite Wolverine is Sevy’s choice, while Ewing believes it’s Havok. Emma Frost gets Duggan’s vote, and Dauterman leans toward Cyclops. Foxe’s gut instinct tells him it’s Storm, while Mystique’s willingness to burn the world to the ground for love, with some to spare for her children Rogue and Nightcrawler is all the proof Blum needs. Jurden shares Blum’s sentiment.

Brevoort, much like Gillen, believes it used to be Beast at a time before he discarded his human needs and desires in favor of science. The editor insists, despite Angel’s best efforts, Gambit’s the guy. Loo also thinks it’s Gambit, agreeing the suave mutant knows his way around charming women. Oliveira has Gambit and Nightcrawler tied in first place for their ability to “both fall head over heels in besotted, horny love and are willing to make absolute fools of themselves to show you how wonderful you are.”
