After directing Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, there’s a chance that Joe and Anthony Russo, also known as the Russo Brothers, could tackle an X-Men movie for Marvel Studios.

The Russo Brothers previously directed 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame for Marvel. Prior to that, they made 2002’s Welcome to Collinwood and 2006’s You, Me and Dupree, while they also worked on television shows such as Arrested Development, Community, and more.

Following Avengers: Endgame, the brothers went on to do some other projects for a while, as they made 2021’s Cherry, 2022’s The Gray Man, and, most recently, 2025’s The Electric State. Then, at San Diego Comic-Con last year, it was announced that Joe and Anthony would be directing 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday and 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars.

Per Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider, the are rumors that the Russos could direct a new MCU X-Men movie after Avengers: Secret Wars.

This is only a rumor at this time, with there being no official confirmation for Marvel Studios. Sneider also noted, “I wonder if the recent failure of their Netflix movie The Electric State changes the math on that equation, as Feige surely knows better than to put all of his eggs in one basket.”

An X-Men movie is in early stages of development over at Marvel Studios, though no release date information has yet been announced.

It’s also worth noting that a number of mutant characters — Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen’s Magneto, Kelsey Grammer’s Hank McCoy/Beast, Alan Cumming’s Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique, James Marsden’s Scott Summers/Cyclops, Channing Tatum’s Gambit, and Tenoch Huerta’s Namor — will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, though how big of a role they will have remains unclear at this time.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released in United States theaters on May 1, 2026.
