Warning: Spoilers Ahead for Ultimate Wolverine #4!Professor X is done with the X-Men, and to conclude the classic X-Men leader’s exit, the Ultimate Universe has also said goodbye to Charles Xavier, with Marvel making it clear there is no going back because even within the Ultimate Universe, Professor X is already dead. Charles Xavier’s announcement of his retirement and departure from the X-Men marks the new status quo, and Marvel continues this sentiment within its Ultimate Universe.

In Ultimate Wolverine #8, written by Chris Condon and illustrated by Alessandro Cappuccio, a transcript from the scientist behind Wolverine’s Winter Soldier transformation reveals the tragic fate of Professor X. Not only is Professor X retiring from the X-Men within Marvel’s main Earth-616 Universe, but now within the Ultimate Universe, Professor Xavier has long been dead.

Furthermore, Xavier’s brain has been used to enhance the powers of the “Phoenix Specimen, ” a truly morbid fate for the X-Men founder. With this major character’s death, Marvel is showing it is serious about shifting Professor Charles Xavier away from X-Men lore.

Charles Xavier’s cruel ending as a floating brain indicates that Marvel will not be reuniting Professor X with his X-Men anytime soon.

In X-Manhunt Omega #1, following a long manhunt for Professor X, Charles Xavier finally announces to all his former allies that he is retiring from the X-Men and will be traveling into space with his wife Lilandra of the Shi’ar Empire to rescue their daughter. This bold declaration marked a massive change to X-Men lore as Marvel will be separating the X-Men’s long-time mentor from the main narrative. Now, Marvel’s Ultimate Universe is following suit, but the Ultimate Universe has set a darker reality for mutants, giving Charles Xavier a horrifying fate compared to his Earth-616 counterpart.

Marvel’s Ultimate Universe has shown it is not afraid to give beloved X-Men characters brutal deaths before they get the chance to be fully introduced, as seen with Mystique and Nightcrawler’s deaths at the hands of Wolverine, and Professor X is no exception. Charles Xavier’s cruel ending as a floating brain indicates that Marvel will not be reuniting Professor X with his X-Men anytime soon. His untimely death not only marks the end of an era for the X-Men but also a new, darker status quo for the Maker’s new Ultimate Universe.

The X-Men’s Founder Is Gone, and Marvel’s New Universe Isn’t Looking Back

Professor Xavier stood as an X-Men staple and the team’s founder; however, Xavier’s moral ambiguity distanced him from his X-Men, leading many of his former students to view Professor X as a villain. Marvel erased his controversial behavior by explaining that Professor X had a brain tumor that was altering his personality, and removing it restored him to his original state before he quit the team. The Ultimate Universe has not been as kind, as Xavier’s death is far more abrupt; despite this, Xavier’s brain may still play an integral part in Ultimate Wolverine’s story.

Though Professor Xavier’s time with the X-Men is over and his former students, such as Cyclops and Rogue, have long since taken his place as leader, he will remain in Marvel’s mythos as a key player within the universe’s cosmic lore. The same cannot be said for Ultimate Professor X, who has been permanently removed from the leadership role he once held. His death in the Ultimate Universe makes it clear that Marvel has no plans to return the X-Men to their original status quo anytime soon.
