Wolverine’s oldest enemy is on the verge of becoming a whole new kind of gilded god.
Wolverine #7 finds Logan and Laura Kinney surrounded by a band of Adamantine-laced villains, all under the thrall of the ancient Romulus. After a grueling battle, Wolverine finally comes to understand the depths of the Adamantine’s history, as well as the true extent of Romulus’ efforts. As it turns out, Romulus hasn’t actually been building an army of unbreakable villains to lord over, but to harvest and add to his own power, all in the hopes of ascending to a state of literal godhood.

By the time that Romulus made his Marvel Comics debut in the pages of 2007’s Wolverine #55 by Jeph Loeb and Simon Bianchi, the villain had already spent more than a year being discussed in hushed tones and ominous portents. An ancient being who, by his own accounts, existed before the rise of homo-sapiens as the world’s foremost species, Romulus was a key figure in the rise and fall of ancient Rome. Although it was The Hand whose efforts initially caused Romulus and Logan to cross paths, the former’s near-obsessive interest in the latter saw their lives permanently entwined in the worst ways imaginable.
Over the course of decades, Romulus masterminded a series of abject tragedies that befell Logan during his weakest moments. The most infamous of these was Romulus who hired the Winter Soldier to assassinate Logan’s former lover, Itsu. As bad as that was on its own, Romulus took things a step further by making Logan believe that his unborn son, Akihiro, had died along with Itsu, all while raising the boy in secret and instilling a deep-seated hatred for his father.

Mystique Just Lost Everything
Mystique has officially paid the price for pushing the limits of her own powers, and she is more than happy with everything it cost her.
Romulus’ latest plot has seen him hunt down and take control of a variety of heroes and villains. Thanks to the ancient, mystic metal known as Adamantine, a predecessor to the Adamantium coursing through the likes of Lady Deathstrike and Cyber, Romulus has twisted the minds of some of Marvel’s most powerful characters, leaving them completely under his command. On top of the immense power that Romulus is afforded by the Adamantine, there is no telling how much control he has over the metal, which has previously proven itself to be just as sentient as any of the Marvel Universe’s oozing symbiotes.
