As Wolverine approaches his milestone 400th comic issue, Marvel is officially promising fans “the Wolverine story you never thought you’d see.” The issue is designed to set up Logan’s upcoming adventures, with the introduction of a new archenemy and a “family revelation” that is sure to stun readers.

Wolverine’s new solo series began with him reeling from the dissolution of the mutant nation of Krakoa, licking his wounds in the Canadian tundra. Sadly, Logan’s enemies refused to give him time to heal, and it wasn’t long before Wolverine was forced into battle with his old foe Cyber. He’s had cause to regret their fight since, since it awoke an ancient seam of the mythic metal Adamantine. This sentient metal of the gods has begun taking control of Wolverine’s villains, seeking to purge all adamantium from Earth – and in Wolverine #400, its true form will be revealed.

CELEBRATING 400 ISSUES OF WOLVERINE WITH THE FIGHT OF HIS LIFE! A massive issue you cannot afford to miss! Wolverine faces off with the Adamantine! The Wendigo is pulled into a deadly trap as a specter from Wolverine’s past emerges — and the Wolverine story you never thought you’d see begins here!

In a recent press release, Marvel revealed the issue will include two stories by Saladin Ahmed and Martín Cóccolo, with one continuing Logan’s battle against the Adamantine. The other promises a “surprise return from Logan’s past.” A third story from Daniel Warren Johnson will celebrate Wolverine’s legacy in Marvel comics, with this issue representing his 400th solo comic since his debut. Marvel also shared awesome variant covers for the issue from Andy Kubert and Jerome Opeña, below. Ahmed says:

A big anniversary issue is always a great excuse to go crazy with reveals and unveilings, and we’ve taken that to heart here! In this over-sized issue an old enemy drives Logan’s new pupil the Wendigo to the brink, Logan finally comes face to face with the cryptic entity known as the Adamantine, and a stunning new family revelation plants the seeds for the next chaotic chapter of Logan’s life.

Since Marvel failed to pay off Romulus’ immense importance to Wolverine’s life story, he’s likely to be the antagonist fans most want to see get a second chance.

Wolverine’s Most Extreme Redesign Resurfaces in 2000s Movie Concept Art

One year ahead of 2000’s X-Men movie, fans got to see some radical Wolverine redesigns in concept art that’s just as exciting today.

Romulus and Ogun Would Represent Major Returns for Logan

Martín Cóccolo’s cover teases some major names from Wolverine’s past. While some are villains currently controlled by the Adamantine, others are long-lost threats overdue for a return. The devilish red mask of Ogun can be seen – the villain who trained Wolverine and his protégé Kitty Pryde. Ogun’s return would make sense now that Wolverine is training Leonard – a teenager who is the victim of the Wendigo curse. The issue’s summary suggests Ogun may have his eyes set on Wolverine’s new charge.

Other figures include Wolverine’s recently executed nemesis Sabretooth, as well as the mastermind Romulus, who orchestrated decades of Wolverine’s life, including his time at Weapon X. Romulus has extensive ties to Wolverine’s family, and could easily represent the “family revelation” promised by Marvel’s press release, while also being a major blast from the past. Any of these villains coming back would be big news, but since Marvel failed to pay off Romulus’ immense importance to Wolverine’s life story, he’s likely to be the antagonist fans most want to see get a second chance.

Sabretooth was only killed in late 2024 – his return would be an over-speedy resurrection, albeit easy to explain given Adamantine’s apparent power and interest in those who possess adamantium upgrades.

The true answer is coming as Wolverine #8 hits comic stands, kicking off the next year of stories for X-Men’s unkillable hero.

Wolverine #8/#400 is coming April 16 from Marvel Comics.

Wolverine

The human mutant Wolverine (a.k.a. Logan) was born James Howlett, blessed with a superhuman healing factor, senses, and physiology. Subjecting himself to experimentation to augment his skeleton and claws with adamantium, Logan is as deadly as he is reckless, impulsive, and short-tempered. Making him the X-Men’s wildest and deadliest member, and one of Marvel Comics’ biggest stars. He’s played in Fox and Marvel’s movie franchises by Hugh Jackman.
